I added some Melafix to her water last night and she'd been swimming around as well as she could with half of a fin missing. This morning she's lying at the bottom of the tank like she's given up. :(
Parameters this morning:
pH: 7.4
Ammonia: 0
NitrIte: 0
NitrAte: 40
I am fairly new to this having adopted an aquarium full of fish from my new landlord. Feel free to look up my past posts for more information. Anyway, as I was changing the water in my 40 gallon yesterday, I noticed that my long finned black skirt tetra was missing half of one of her pectoral...
Oh! You also have to be sure that they all require similar water temperatures and parameters. You don't want to have a boiled fishy because the others prefer a warmer climate!
You are going to want 1 or 2 gallons per inch of fish. For a 29 gallon tank, that would be extremely overstocked. Look up their information on liveaquaria.com. Even if they were only an inch long you would initially need to accomodate 22 inches worth of fish! At full size you would need to have...
By the way, when you replace the cartridge, put that one behind it (so the water goes through it first). This should help you maintain your cycle and get some of the beneficial bacteria transferred to the new cartridge. You can take the old one out after a few days.
My understanding is that the brown stuff is our beneficial bacteria. I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but it worked wonders when I put it into my new tank to cycle it!
Also, too much light can cause algae growth in the tank. When I "adopted" my tank from its former owner it was covered...
No, I'm too new to all of this and am trying to get the courage up to plant a tank. This one has nothing but silk plants at this time. Would the fact that I used a seriously bacteria laden cartridge from my other tank to help things along make a difference?
After adding ammonia last night, my parameters were:
pH: 8.2
Ammonia: 4ppm
NitrIte: 0ppm
NitrAte: 40ppm
Almost 12 hours later my parameters stand at:
pH: 8.1
Ammonia: 2ppm
NitrIte: .25ppm
NitrAte: 40ppm
I will test again around noon and see how it's going.
I used about 3/4 cap full of pure ammonia and a pinch of food in a 30 gallon tank. I was told that the food helps with getting the bacteria to grow.
I added more ammonia last night to get it back to 4ppm and will be re-testing the parameters shortly.
Thanks for the replies!
Hello!
I posted exactly a week ago about doing a fish-less cycle. As was suggested, I started adding ammonia to the water with a pinch of flake food. I also took the filter cartridge from one of the filters in my other tank, shook it out in the water and then placed it in the filter in front of...
Progress:
Added ammonia yesterday afternoon(thank goodness I have an Ace hardware 5 minutes away)
Parameters this morning:
pH: 8.4
Ammonia: 4.0
NitrIte: .50
NitrAte: 40
Took old filter cartridge from one of the filters on my 40 gallon and squeezed it out into the new tank, then put it into...
