I just saw this in my tank for the first time ever! I am thinking its a spiny brittle star, but I thought they only had 5 legs can they have 6 and is that what this is??????
It is not mucous it is growing and it has been there for a while mow about a month now. I am wondering if it a sponge to. Now it has spots that seem to be getting a shine on it almost like its shimmering, its really weird!
sounds like algae blooming to me as well the same thing happen to my tank as well. I had to keep it covered with a blanket to prevent any light from getting in for almost 5 days. I tried a lot of things that seemed to be the only thing that helped.
If you pop them off they will not grow back in the same spot but more will generally grow in the same area. when I clean my tank they pop off in some areas mainly when they get to long.
I have them all over my tank they have never caused a problem, but if you want them gone you can take a razor or your finger to pop them off, but they will just keep regrowing.

Any clues to what this stuff is, it is a clear milky film growing on one of my live rocks. I can only see in one spot that there is a small hole in the one on the far left. I circled some of the spots in black. it is all connected and it is growing across the whole rock.
