    Dirted tanks/ soil bacteria

I've read in several threads on various forums that a shovel full of topsoil from your yard contains more nitrifying bacteria that you'll ever grow in your filter. Just read an article that supports that idea...though not directly related to the nitrogen cycle. I'm not making any scientific...

    Johny's 60 gal planted/dirted tank

That's what I'll do. I'm moving towards having a heavily planted tank. It's nice when a trimming is almost full grown already Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

Those two aren't blocking all the light, but there are others. I was just surprised how long they got so quickly. Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

What do ya think? Time to trim the plants? I've been neglecting then for a while apparently. Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

    Blue Balloon Ram eggs

So I'm pretty sure our blue balloon rams laid eggs. I noticed this morning that one of them was sequestering itself in a part of the tank it usually doesn't hang out in. I also noticed it was (uncharacteristically) very aggressive towards ANYTHING that got near it. Looked closer..... Looks like...

Lol yeah the angels in particular are not shy! I've done a lot of fiddling in the tank, so my hands have been in there a lot. They swim right up to my arms while I'm planting/trimming etc. Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

    Keeping fish in high pH?

My pH runs at 8.0, so not as high, but certainly in the higher range. Most community fish will adjust to pH, though 8.8 is a bit high. How are you testing for pH? When ever I get really off test results I always retest before acting. Make sure your results are accurate before doing anything...

    Johny's 60 gal planted/dirted tank

Thank you. I'm hopeful I can remove the bags of gravel soon. The piece on the right was added at the top and allowed to float till it water logged and sank. I'm just waiting a while longer to make sure the larger piece stays put. Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

    Johny's 60 gal planted/dirted tank

So I haven't posted on here for a while. I've had some ups and downs with the tank. All my plants started melting. Nothing, except the plants that were already tall were doing very well. Finally decided that I needed more light. Threw a second led light on top, pulled the dying plays, floated...

47 Gallon Column... Help with questions please!

I agree with Stacy, start with what you have and add to it, mostly I would just say be aware that the hight can create challenges such as needing more light or dead spots. Sent from my LG-H631 using Tapatalk

47 Gallon Column... Help with questions please!

I forgot to mention the powerhead. I find it helpful to run one lower in the tank line suggested. I have a canister filter and have the out flow direted near the surface to help with agitating the water surface for gas exchange. It doesn't allow for much current lower down. I put a powerhead...
