Dont be so negative, I have seen 12gal tanks bursting with life, you can do a lot with a 46 gal! Try to get some more snails and maybe some gobies. You can get more "nanofish" by staying away from the bigger fish, and they tend to have interesting personalities. Firefish, watchmen, diamonds, and...
I just got some dwarf planaxis snails and they are pretty cool. Spend all their time under the sand in my tanks, and even go upside down and clean the bottoms of the rocks. Also because they are slow, the hermits have been leaving them alone, but it is true they will go after the snails sometimes.
For such a nice looking fish, they can have moments of evil! Mine used to love knocking the snails off the glass, and pushing around the blue legs. He nipped up a couple of them, until he got transferred to a friend's tank. Now he behaves! Go figure.
I have a firefish, and I love it. Bit of a scaredy "cat" though. I think it is cool how he will quickly dart in and out of the rocks if he thinks something might happen. Sand sifting gobies are really cool as well, and will help clean your tank. Gobies are great in general- you can't go wrong.
