    first coral, mistake?

They climb the glass to get to the nori/seaweed on my clip. Anything the Tangs dont eat (quickly) will be gone shortly.

    first coral, mistake?

I have 6 black/purple urchins and multiple corals. No issues other than a lack of complete coralline coverage on my rocks.

    Urchin

I have 6 that hitch hiked on my LR. The only negative I can say about them is that they are mini bulldozers and will knock over small frags, so I had to make sure all my frags were attached to larger rocks. The second bad thing is that I barely have any coralline algae. They eat it all and...

    SouthDown

BillyZ - Thanks. No need to look. I went on a hunt a while back and found some sand locally at KMart that is now in my tank. Thanks!

DIY Auto Top Off - schematic and pictures

Thanks!! Yep, an Engineer I am. All float switches are about 1" into a piece of 1.25" PVC. In my short term testing they worked great eliminating any on/off cycles from surface agitation. If for any reason I need additional length, I will slip a 1.25" coupler on the bottom.

DIY Auto Top Off - schematic and pictures

I have been designing this for about 1 week. I built is over the weekend and its working great. Below is the schematic. I don't have step-by-step pictures as I did things in a crazy order and that would be more confusing. Parts List ~ 3 Float Switches (Floatswitches.net $6.00 each) ~1...

what "compartments" (and order) go into a sump?

I'll try to find an updated picture of my Sump with Skimmer in stand. It helps illustrate what I am saying next. As far as disadvantages, no, advantages, less space used, so it can be used elsewhere. A Skimmer functions by taking in water and putting it "through" the bubbles to remove...

what "compartments" (and order) go into a sump?

If it's an option, you could do something like this: H20 Entry Skimmer section (shared), *bubble trap*, Return, Fuge For this to work, you would need to have water entering on both sides, with the return in the middle. The is the F design on http://www.melevsreef.com and I just build...

    Why would this happen!!!!

Try something simple like putting an air stone on an air pump in the water. That should saturate the water with O2.

    Reef Safe Emerald?

Emerald Crabs, like other crabs may or many not nibble at your corals. I have an Emerald and it has not touched any of my COrals, but that does not mean it's not looking at them and drooling.

What are the benefits of a "True Union" Ball Valve

I see these online, but can not figure out what is so special about them. I can see that they are smaller than using 2 Unions and a valve, but other than that, whats so special.

    Closed Loop Manifold? DIY

Here is a picture of a closed loop manifold. Also, this thread at Reef Centeral has a TON of information on manifolds. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=520145 The 2 outlet closed loop on Meves site is just a closed loop with a SCWD to create changing water currents.

    New 5.5g AGA(((UPDATE PICS!!)))

I've considered getting a nano tank for my office. Due to the small size I was going to only fill it with a couple active shrimp or crabs. Have you considered that? I also think it would make a decent Mantis tank.

    Closed Loop Manifold? DIY

Keep in mind that while this link is for a closed loop, it's not a manifold. A Manifold is a tube system that circlules the top of the tank with several outlets usually directed with lock line or 45* PVC plumbing.

    Closed Loop Manifold? DIY

You plan on only having 2 outlets? Why only 2?? For the cost of the plumbing parts it would be better to add several outlets (1 for every 10 gallons) and space them out. Plug the ones you are not using. You then then switch to different outlets from time to time to change up water flows...
