It is most definitely a duncan. Trumpet coral aka candy cane has a plain non tissue skeleton where as duncan has tissue covering its skeleton typically being green in color.
You want to change it once it becomes clogged and water spills out the top. I personally do mine once a week as I work out of town but every 4-5 days should be about right.
Hate to burst your bubble but that's not a duncan. It's actually a torch coral, you can tell by the skeleton. Duncan's have a flesh covered skeleton most other LPS do not.
