Okay, thanks. He's absoloubtly fine swimming with them but just won't let them into that patch when he's there, he darts towards them, but doesn't chase or anything like that. He's really shy too, that doesn't help

Iv got to disagree. I put 7 neons into my tank (one of the first fish I put in) they helped to cycle it, and they have been through a stage where the nitrates and nitrites were very high! Needless to say, they are still healthy and iv not had any problems with them, other than the odd chase!
They are best kept on their own or in a species only tank. If they are in a species only tank, they must have lots of hiding places, be well fed and the tank must be at least 15 gallons. If not then they will tear limbs of each other
