    Danios vs. Tiger Barbs

Thanks for your thoughts, Upstate. How many TBarbs could I add, if I leave the Danio count at four? We're talking 1.5 - 2-inch long fish; using the 1-inch per gallon rule of thumb, I could have 15 fish in this water. I say that, knowing that the math/chems MIGHT be OK, but socially, that...

    Danios vs. Tiger Barbs

No jumping allowed Hi Barliman, Thanks for your reply. I'm pretty sure we didn't have jumpers, no room in the small cracks where I cut out the tank topper to allow for my Fluval plumbing. Small gaps; they'd have to more accurate than Luke Skywalker launching two rounds into the exhaust port...

    Danios vs. Tiger Barbs

Hello friends, Tank History:  After disaster took my veil-tail Goldies away, I learned my lesson, and after rebuilding/regrowing the entire aquarium, I opted for smaller fish species which have stomachs. I learned that Zebra Danios are hearty fish, and I've always loved the appearance...

Control troubles on my Current LED

Hello fish friends, I'm looking to see if other Current LED lighting system owners have had trouble with the on/off lighting remote control. At first, I couldn't turn the lights on. I thought perhaps the battery had gone dead. I replaced the battery (CR2025) but no luck, lights still wouldn't...

    Goldfish doesn't look too good.

suggested numbers perhaps? Awhutter, Could you please add some more info., perhaps suggesting what types of numbers you'd prefer to see in a healthy goldfish aquarium? I'm aware total volume of water and size/quantity of fish are of course HUGE factors, but are there some general numbers you...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

Hi Tiger... Sorry 'bout those frustrations! :banghead: I empathize with you in your distress. On the hose cleaner, if you're up for a DIY, I was about to do this myself (before I discovered those snake brushes on Amazon) — local hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot, Osh, Ace/Arrow, etc)...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

OK, on Amazon, the hose snake is: Jardin Aquarium Water Filter Pipe Air Tube Hose Stainless Steel Cleaner. (Couldn't get to the product number, sorry) It's a whopping $3.16, from "Mall of America" on Amazon. Stainless steel snake with decent stiff nylon bristles on each end. For $3.16...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

Your welcome! Happy to help. I don't recall the name of the hose snake/brush. I'll see if I can dig up the Amazon reference and I'll pass it along. It's just about the only means to super-scrub those hoses! I'm sure there are several DIY hacks which may indeed work, however, I personally...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

On the Fluval 206, I close the flow valve completely, prior to any WC. In this state, you can remove the hose valve assembly from the top of the motor housing (top) of the filter. I'm not sure if the 406 disassembles in the same manner... At this point, as the hoses are just hanging there...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

You're welcome! Hey, I forgot to mention, since you've got a canister filter; SNAKE THOSE HOSES! m My word how gunked-up they get!! Depending on the bio-load, they'll need periodic cleaning every 2-6 months. My Fluval 206 is keeping pace with my two Veil Tails; filtration is just about maxed...

    Swampy Smelling Aquarium

I use my nose for regular "odor checks" - and I can tell when the water is healthy and when it's not. Carefully clean ALL the nooks and crannies of the HOB filter and the glass top. Try your best to thoroughly clean the undersides of the glass top, the tank's top edge rim (which supports the...

Black moor spitting out its food

I've observed one of my Veil Tail goldies "spill" excess food out of its mouth. In other words, he eats like a pig, stuffing his mouth, and as he begins chewing, excess food falls out, almost as if he spit it out. After a few chews, he goes back for that spilled food. I believe one means to...

    Changing my substrate

Thanks Dueces, I have a Fluval 206, and in this 29/gal tank, it's got very adequate flow. My filter return/clean water feed is at the surface, agitating surface water tension as it should; I've never seen any sand (yet) be disturbed by filtration flow. So I'm fairly confident that is in good...

    Changing my substrate

For those aquarists who have (or had) sand, any advice on vacuuming it without pulling all of it out? I'm completely new to it and it certainly requires a bit more of a touch than gravel. I'm developing a bit of a "swirl the vacuum in small circles to stir-up the waste sediment" technique...
