It is nowhere near the bottom of the sand substrate, but thanks for your suggestion. I also have a rock under the intake so there is no sand under it as well. Perhaps my cory catfish are blowing the sand into the filter?

Yes, especially if you have labyrinth fish

This is probably true, I never fill mine up to the top anyway because of all my labryinth fish, ADF's, Betta, and corys.

I've had that on my tank, I think it's from sand. I just take a strong papertowel and scrub it off, it takes a long time and makes a mess, but that's the only way I've managed to get it off. Make sure your tank is filled up, or else it doesn't work very well. Hope it works
