How long to let cholla soak?

Mine is.Maybe it's because it was dried? I don't know, but I've dumped three buckets of water and it appears the amount of tannin is dropping. It also wants to float. I bet once it stops leaching it will also stop floating. That's fine, I have time.

    Should I change my background?

I bought flat, 12x12 in mirrors from the bath department at Home Depot. I used three of them to form the background of my 29 gallon. They don't reach all the way to the top, but that's only because I didn't put in more than one row. The mirrors come 12 to a box so even if one breaks you have...

    Should I change my background?

If I may make a suggestion: depending on your fish, have you considered a mirror? I have six dwarf neon rainbows in my 29 gal, but it appears as if there are twice that many due to the mirrors behind the tank. When I first put them in the tank, the fish literally were looking at themselves in...

How long to let cholla soak?

Hello, I finally got my mopani wood to stop leaching and it looks GREAT in my tank. (it only took, oh, seven boilings of about three hours each but it's worth it.) I purchased some lovely cholla from a person on ebay (who has lots more, it's nice) and I am soaking it now, as I want to use it...

The day we all work for

My tank is cycled! It went just like so many of you said...two days ago nitrites were still stubbornly stuck sky high and this morning, ZERO. Zed. Nichts, nein, nada!! My pH came down from 8.2 to 7.7 after I added mopani wood. I'll probably add some more ammonia until I can get 0 and 0...

Can I use vinyl gloves to move live rock?

My local pond store sells arm length nitrile gloves, designed specifically for use in deep water..or tanks. Brand name is Atlas (the same company that makes the rubber palmed work gloves you can find in just about any hardware store, feed store, etc.) I am a newbie here on this forum, so please...

    Muffin is a swearbox...

I am a newbie to this forum. I have a 29 gallon freshwater that is still cycling so it has nothing alive in it (although I put in two Anubia in just to make it look more than a dull box of water.) I would like to put some shrimp in it eventually and I notice you have bamboo, or what appears to...

    creating an upwelling current

Right now I have no substrate, as the tank is still cycling. But I bet that it wouldn't like gravel in the intake side. But after I posted this I thought, maybe benthic fishes/bottom dwelling inverts might not like being sucked into the power head. I want to get some Amano shrimp and I have read...

    creating an upwelling current

I'm still in the midst of trying to get my 29 gallon freshwater tank to cycle. Nitrites and nitrAtes are sky high but ammonia is zero after 24 hours. I'm cycling without fish. I have a small powerhead going in it to improve O2 exchange at the surface. I was wondering if anyone has ever put...

    I'm a newbie here

Hello, I am Meadowlark. My first aquarium was a salt water 55 gallon. Yes, I started everything backwards! I had no problems with it, mostly because I'd done a lot of research and studying beforehand. This was in the days of Martin Moe and Julian Sprung. Are they still around? I specialized in...
