The driftwood has only been in the tank for a week. I checked the purigen in the filter and it was very brown. I put in a new bag and am bleaching the old one. Did a partial water change. I'll see what happens.

Is it ok to use charcoal in a planted tank? I read somewhere that you have to be careful using it in a planted tank but I don't know why. I am not using a CO2 system but have driftwood that is making the tank brownish and I would like to clear it up using Purigen and charcoal. Is it safe? Thanks

Here's a picture of the tank with the driftwood.

The tank is planted and in addition to the huge driftwood there are two small/medium pieces of mopani and another medium piece of Malaysian. I just realized that its only been in the tank for 5 days and it dropped that much.

The biggest piece of driftwood is 28 lbs. I just put it in last week. I soaked it in the bathtub for a week with hot water and poured boiling water over it often. The water out of the faucet is around 8. Would a water change help?

The fish are acting fine. I'm afraid it will drop even lower while I am gone. The fish in the tank are: 2 Angels quarter-half dollar size 3 Silver Dollars half dollar size 3 Dennisons barbs 3" 2 Bala Sharks 2.5-3" 3 Rosy Fire Barbs 2.5" 1 Black Ghost 3" 3 Upside down Cats 2.5" 4...

In just over a week the ph in my 125 gal has dropped from 8 to 6.8-7.0. It is probably from the driftwood I put in. The water is brownish and I have ordered purigen but it won't be here til Monday. I have to go out of town tomorrow afternoon. What can I do to stabilize it while I'm gone...

I have 250 ml of purigen in the Fluval fx5 filter. It doesn't seem to be working should I use more? The tank is 125 gal. Thanks

Does purigen remove tannins from driftwood? If not what will? I put a huge piece of driftwood in my tank after I soaked it in hot water for a week and the water has a brownish tint. I would really like it to clear up. Thanks!

Thanks I will keep an eye on things and think about which way to go. I just redecorated the tank yesterday. I put in a huge piece of driftwood, maybe that will help.

I am hesitant to add more balas since they get so big. I was thinking about a couple more dennisons. I can't find any info on the fire rosy barbs. They are so wild. Swimming fast and non stop. All three are males I think. Would a couple of regular female rosy barbs settle them down? I think...

I just got 2 quarter sized angels. It seems that another fish is nipping on the feeler fins (don't know what they are called) that hang down. Will they grow back and what can I do to stop the others from nipping? Thanks.
