Icky ick - Can our inverts tolerate salt?

We have a canister filter and a sponge. I turned 'em both up, to aerate the water a bit, and I've been slowly increasing the water temp today. We're up to 78 now. The tank is usually at 74. I had heard the ick cooties don't reproduce once the water temp is around 86 degrees and their life cycle...

Icky ick - Can our inverts tolerate salt?

We just lost a cory and now I'm noticing white spots on two of our rasboras, so it looks like our 27 gallon freshwater tank has a case of ick. :( I'm turning up the heat to 89 degrees kill it off but I also read that adding a bit of salt to the tank might help. Before I head off the the store...

    More stocking advice needed!

I'd say she's close to 4". She's much larger than the juvenile 2-Spot/3-Spot/Blue Gouramis I saw at the big box pet store the other day. Ours is easily twice the size of those and much larger than our dwarf was. I'm not seeing her chasing any of her tank mates. She was in much closer quarters...

    More stocking advice needed!

We had a dwarf gourami in the tank originally but it died of what we're fairly sure was iridovirus. That was a huge bummer that we didn't want to revisit so we opted for a gourami that wasn't susceptible to that virus. Pretty sure our new gourami is an adult female and she seems okay in there so...

    More stocking advice needed!

Its a cube and I think its 20 by 20 by 20. Plenty roomy and there are lots of good hiding places but there isn't any one really long dimension if there were fish who needed to swim distances.

    More stocking advice needed!

Hey all! We recently made some new additions to our 27 gal cube. We now have 8 harlequin rasboras, 5 false julii cories, a 2-spot gourami (wanted a pearl gourami but that's what the oh-so-helpful dude at the LFS bagged up for me...d'oh), and several snails. Everyone seems to be getting along...

Our 27 gallon cube is practically empty....restocking ideas needed!

Thanks! We'll add Pearl Gouramis to our shopping list. :thumb:

Our 27 gallon cube is practically empty....restocking ideas needed!

We suspect our previous gourami died from Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus which I understand is highly contagious. So can we ever safely have another gourami in our tank? I has been a few months since we lost our fish. Any idea how long the virus lingers and whether it is just an issue for the Powder...

Our 27 gallon cube is practically empty....restocking ideas needed!

We had been thinking we might try a school of danios too. Last year, we bought a dozen Cardinal Tetras at our LFS but they ALL died in quarantine. So frustrating. From what I've heard, the danios are a hardier fish. They aren't particularly flashy, though, and we really do want a larger...

Our 27 gallon cube is practically empty....restocking ideas needed!

Loaches prefer a sand bottom, though, right? We have gravel...it's the stuff our LFS recommended since we weren't planning to have a planted tank (at least not until we got more invested in this hobby). But now I've been learning at all the bottom fish want sand and I'm, like, "D'oh!" So, let...

Our 27 gallon cube is practically empty....restocking ideas needed!

So, after lingering for several months and breaking our hearts, our sick Dwarf Gourami finally went to that glorious aquarium in the sky, leaving our tank (a 27 gallon cube) looking pretty sad. We currently only have a small school of Harlequin Rasboras (eight of 'em), a shrimp, and some snails...

    Mystery snails are getting HUGE!

I like the idea of purposely growing algae on rocks for the snails. Hadn't even thought of doing that but it makes good sense! I supplement my fish's normal flake food with spirulina flakes, so hopefully the snails are getting some of that too. Not sure how much of the flake is making it to the...

    Mystery snails are getting HUGE!

A few weeks ago, we bought some snails to deal with a brown algae problem we had been fighting for months. I went to the LFS with the intention of getting a couple of nerites. We have a 27 gallon cube and when I discussed it with the guy at the store, he told me he had a dozen in his 25 gallon...

Should we toss the sponge filter?

Great! Thanks for the advice. We'll wait a few weeks on the new fish, then.

Should we toss the sponge filter?

Just a brief overview of what's going on before I ask my question... We currently have our dwarf gourami in a quarantine tank because he developed a mysterious internal lump on one side of his body. His scales aren't "pineconed" and he's swimming and eating normally. There are no blood streaks...
