    evil crab and lazy snails

I have 2 identical tanks, both contain 4 turban snails 8 tiny hermit crabs 1 anenome and 1 emerald green crab. The snails and emerald crab are new additions. The hermits and the anenomes seem to be just loving life, but the snails just lay there not moving, some face down some face up and 1...

concerned & confused about test results

Im glad your nitrates are back under control. And if you have no place for nitrates to go (aka plants) then yes it was probably your old test kit. over a span of time nitrates could have been building higher and higher while you got low readings.

    Nitrites still really high !

Steer, few questions. 55litre, but what else is in the tank? plants substrate rocks all that.

    No2 issue...

Jeta, the tanks are 3 months old, and have cycled once already. Plus my tank has lava rock as well as 4 inchs of substrate and various plants and a 3'' x 4'' filter and bio wheel. I dont see how i would be short of collective BB area. But good suggestion nonetheless.

concerned & confused about test results

well, instead of replacing ALL your water, which requires alot of extra work, do a handful of PWC`s, to to get the lvls down to where there acceptable and add plants  especially those i suggested because you can leave them grouped together and move them tank to tank. Even if u stick with...

concerned & confused about test results

generally yes, you would see fish issues with nitrate levels over 30ppm. While that is pretty standered there was a test done by Gambusia in Florida springs that shows reproduction levels reduced in as much as 1.5ppm, they have also show some cat fish habiting a tank with lvls over 100ppm for...

concerned & confused about test results

Mlani, if your test is showing 80-160 and that is the top of your Kit range, then your nitrates can be anything over that. Ok so lets say its at like say 350PPM. it will show up as 80-150. u do a PWC, now the lvls are 210ppm, it reduced but the kit is reading the same. try this. Take a cup of...

    No2 issue...

Jlk, that is fantastic advice. id assumed because of my tap PH lvl that i would be over stocked in minerals and whatnot. my PH is something around 8.4-8.9. i live within about 1/4 mile of the water recycling plant. so lvls vary. I dont know, but i will ask my Ex. either way, im sure i can make...

    No2 issue...

well, i just spent 3 hours making slides from my filter, water at various depths plants algae u name it. so tomarrow into the microscope and see if anything looks bad. but Mlani, if nothing pans out, i will be very open to hair pulling tactics!:banghead:
