    Sick or old fancy goldfish

Thank you for that - looking at the fantail sites they seemed to suggest 6-8 in inches in total including tail and that the body would easily fit in your hand. She’s larger than my hand so I’m not sure she is stunted. One of the things we did do when we took over her care was spend time with the...

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

Thank you everyone. Sorry for the delay in responding - I have been busy cleaning the spare tank as it’s been in storage. The methylene blue will arrive tomorrow. I added salt as per instructions yesterday but the infection is definitely worse. The melafix has just arrived - I’ll add that for...

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

Methylene blue was the treatment that worked before for the red pest (which is what this looks like). Back then we identified a water quality issue of nitrate and were able to resolve it (whilst she recovered in a smaller tank) through a thorough tank cleaning including replacement of substrate...

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

She’s paler in the the top photo as she’s older then. Oh re: plants. No we don’t have any. We used to but she kept ripping them apart and then they’d float into and jam the filter.

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

Thanks for the advice so far. I will send photos of current status in the morning if she’s still with us. It’s middle of the night here. Levels as tested were pH 7.4, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20 (the guide said anything over 40 was a concern). Water change is approx. 25% once a week...

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

Looking at pictures - I don’t think this fish has comet in her. I think she’s pure fantail. It was just something a person at the fish shop suggested when we showed them a photo once. But my sister had told me it was just a fantail so I don’t know for sure.

    Sick or old fancy goldfish

We have a fancy fantail/comet cross (we believe)female? goldfish. She has developed red sores on her body and streaks in her fins which we believe to be a bacteria infection. She had this before (over two years ago) and we discovered that there were issues with the water (very high nitrate)...

    Suspected fin rot

Thanks for that. Tank has been cycling for over 7 weeks. Currently testing daily as I know that water quality has a big effect on fin rot. Ammonia always seems at slightly more than 0 but less than 0.25 (its just not quite the perfect yellow). Nitrite is definitively zero. Nitrates are coming...

    Suspected fin rot

Also - BB?? Not sure of the acronym and wasn't in FAQs - I'm guessing something to do with the bacteria in the biofilter?

    Suspected fin rot

Thanks Kingfisher Okay I will definitely look at getting the Epsom salts. Amazon in the UK doesn't stock either treatment you suggest (that I could see) so I may try the Melafix first and if I don't have success, see if I can find your recommendations elsewhere. Re: the cycle - how long does...

    Suspected fin rot

Pictures of Flappy Here he is being still for a change which means the shredding can't be seen but the front of the dorsal fin looks suspect to me. Here's the red spots on the caudual fins I was talking about. Also the front of the dorsal fin looks uneven and white, and I think that's...

    Suspected fin rot

I should also mention it looks like he has burst blood vessels in his caudual fin. However, I've read somewhere that this happens with age for fantail goldfish?? I've managed to get pictures - I'll upload in a second but I think he has fin rot - on his dorsal, pelvic and anal fins and possibly...

    Suspected fin rot

Suspected fin rot (in fantail goldfish) Hi all, I posted before to get advice when doing a forced fish-in cycle after adopting both a fan-tail goldfish fish and it's 30 gallon tank. We think the fish-in-cycle is done. Recently went away and when came back the water was 0.25 or less for both...

Newbie requesting advice on set-up and cycle

These are the readings before I did a 50% water change first thing this morning (about 2 hours ago). High pH - reading was weird this morning because I couldn't match the colour - it was kind of magenta which I figured isn't as high as the higher readings which was purple and therefore was...

Newbie requesting advice on set-up and cycle

Update Thank you. Flappy is now in his tank and seems to be thriving. pH and ammonia and nitrates a little raised - will test again in a few hours and assess what to do. I know daily (if not more) pwc was recommended above. I just wanted to check if this was the best plan as I live in a chalky...
