Yeah I'd love to go the dwarf cichlids but the problem I'm really having with this tank is it sits about 10 feet above the ground. Sorry should have mentioned that before. So I really need to keep it stocked with larger fish.
I can't do anything about how high up the tanks sit.
All 3 of these...
Hey guys me and a friend are in charge of a new fish section at a lfs in Australia. We have a 9x2x2 planted tank we are building and we are looking for suggestions of the live stock to place in them.
Filtration is a 5x2x2 sump.
Plants are lowlight anubias and java.

Well i've been into fishing (angling) for aslong as i can remember i always loved watching fish swim through the water and one afternoon i decided to set up a tank.
well that spiralled out of control to 7 tanks running at one point, varying from simple betta set ups to a coral probagation...
I agree they shouldn't be sold to the general public. But I've seen them kept in absolutely huge tanks and indoor ponds happily.

Check to make sure your filters are flowing mine wasn't and needed a quick fix up.
Have you thought of lighting?
And I agree small reefs are not the best for beginners but with dedication they are completely possible.
Research every fish and invert you intend to put in the tank and do your best not to impulse buy. Keep the bio load as light as possible
Sadly with work and study in the new year 97 hours combined. I've taken down my reef and donated livestock to friends who have the resources to take it.
I couldn't bare to watch the tank suffer as I doubt I would have had time to maintain it.
If you are set on it though 7.8 gallons would be horrible for anything but dwarf seahorses
Maybe look in your local area for a marine fish keepers club. Someone there would be able to assist you in your endeavor.
Your on the right step though I'm sure everyone here has a mistake that could have...
Your sand may not be perfectly white but maybe look at in from a different view. Neithers the oceans what you've got is just all manner of life down to the tiny creatures in the sand. Just a little Eco system
Not to useful just hoping that maybe if you looked at it from a different perspective...
