    Just a few questions ...

Thanks for the reply, i'm pretty sure the tank is cycled, I used a raw shrimp to start the cycle a couple of months ago and saw an ammonia and nitrite spike at which point I added the live rock (which was cured) which reduced these to 0 after a few days, the nitrate has been reducing for the...

    Just a few questions ...

Hi all, I haven't posted on the website for a while as I have been keeping freshwater tanks, but I have recently started a new SW tank and have a couple of questions, my tank is one one of those plug & play style nano's (15 gallons), the built in skimmer is useless though so i'm not using it...

    Live Rock turning green

Its not coralline, I had that on my glass/rocks too when my tank was new, I found turbo snails eat it (I hated the stuff).

    Cannister Filter Questions

not familiar with that filter but if doesn't have any you want to put a tap on the intake and return pipe, otherwise water will siphon from the tank when you remove the cover.

    How often replace bulbs?

You can use NO fluorescents on SW tanks, in fact the corals in the picture for my avatar are growing under nothing but 2 white and one actinic NO fluorescent tubes, in fact the coral on left has doubled in size in last 4 months or so since I got it and is now at least a foot in diameter...

    quick lighting question ...

can you wire two fluorescent tubes to one starter unit? for example could I wire two 18" (15w each) actinic tubes to one 30w (or above) starter unit, only it would be easier to manage and cheaper than buying another starter unit and would mean less wires to plug in, cheers. :D

    Lighting questions

That's what I'm thinking, the only high lighting thing I want to keep is a BTA, but I would of thought it would do ok high up under 150w, the rest would will be mostly soft corals/zoo's/mushrooms etc. It seems pointless buying a 250w bulb in a hope that I can wire it up and that the ballast...

    Lighting questions

that might be my only option, the 400w is virtually brand new though, so it seems pointless buying more stuff that I already have, the 150w is older but I know it works because I used to use it on a previous tank. http://www.marine-lighting.co.uk/ ... you can definitely get them, but as I...

    Lighting questions

ok, thanks for the replies, ... Melosu58, sorry for double posting, the problem is that I have the all the parts to build either a 400w or even a 150w, but I only have an untested ballast without ignitors or anything to build a 250w (which would be Ideal), and I don't want to spend £60 on a...

    Lighting questions

after the height of the cabinet and tank the halide would probably have to be on the ceiling, which isn't really an option :? ..... although I do have an old Arcadia 250w unit (although it doesn't have an igniter so I have no way of testing it), If I were to replace the 400w ballast with the...

    Lighting questions

lighting a 20" cube tank? I want to use halide lighting on the 20" cube tank I plan to build, would 400w be too much? I mainly want to keep soft coral and an anemone or 2, although a couple of SPS corals would be great, (If there are any SPS corals that would get by without added calcium?), or...

    quick question regarding nuisance algae

makes sense, thanks for clarifying that for me.

    How long ich lasts

If you have some money to spend you could get a UV sterilizer, It's not a guaranteed way of getting rid of Ich but about 3-4 weeks ago I added a copper banded butterfly to my tank and didn't realize it had ich until too late, I bought an 18w UV and I haven't seen any of my fish with ich since.

    quick question regarding nuisance algae

let me point out that I do not have an algae problem, in fact my current tank is the only one that hasn't had one, can I just ask why it is recommended that you do lots of PWC's to fix an algae problem? surely this is just going to replenish whatever it is that is feeding it, wouldn't it be...
