I think you've lucky to start with a larger tank. In my opinion the smaller the tank the harder to keep the water balanced. I use both fluval canisters and AC hob filters in my tanks. There are several good brands. Personally I like to get a filter thats a little bigger than recomended...
IMHO the only rainbow that would do well in your tank would be Melanotaenia praecox ( dwarf neon ). I'd suggest getting a school of 5-6. Since you like cories I'd also add a couple more.
Sorry to hear about your angel. Do you have a test kit? What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? More info will help us help you. If you don't have a test kit often lfs will do free water tests.

Oh man, you have my sympathy. To lose a tank of fish so fast. I'm not familiar with gudgeons but wanted to reply. Rainbows are usually tough so you must have a really wicked strain. Good luck and keep us posted.
I think you've got a good chance of saving the rest of your rainbows. A few months ago I had a similiar death in my bosemani rainbowfish tank. I got the tank undercontrol by using water changes and cleaning out my canister filter. IMHO the advice others have given you is right on the money...
