That will work, the only flaws I see is are that you have light on only onside and if your return gets backed up you might have a pretty mess on your hands.
Here is an idea that will allow you to put a sump on your tank for cheap. Just go ahead and get yourself a small rubbermaid storage...
Prob won't cut my own glass as I have never worked with glass before. Here is a rough sketch of what I have in mind.....dimensions might change an inch or two but nothing major. I want to try and keep the water volume no bigger than 50gal.

The skimmer removes organic particles in the water, mimicking what the bech does. A scrubber gets rid or phosphates and nitrates. They each play different role so I wouldn't replace one with the other.
Just wondering do any of you get algae growth around the water edge in your sump...guessing it's prob from the light.
