I don't know how warm these would get but I would be concerned about the heat being too hot for bottom fish. I would think that it would have to be too hot for their comfort so it could heat all the water.

The orange could be the color from your substrate. I am using pool filter sand and it turned my sponge orange as it removed all the smaller dust. The water change probably stirred up some dust from the substrate and clouded the water. I have put quilt stuffing into my filter to clear up my water...
Nitrates are not the only thing you are cleaning out when you do a PWC, it is just the by product we can test for. Once you are good and stable most people would tell you to test once a week. If you are doing weekly PWCs then just test before then.
