Depends if they have been weaned onto frozen foods (Mysis etc).My LFS will not sell any Manderin species until it is feeding well on frozen foods and small flake regularly.
If you are keeping invertebrates or corals in your tank don't use any copper based treatments. Not only will it kill them you won't be able to keep any more of them in that setup. They are intolerant of copper. Best bet is to make sure he's feeding properly and regularly and keep your hands out...
Try directing a bit a water flow over the Leather(power head or turkey baster). The mucus is defence related and nothing to worry about. The extra flow will disperse the mucus gently and allow the polyps to extend.
The brittle star will fine they grow new arms in the event of losing one. As for the lost arm I would take it out though in the ocean I think that the lost arms survive to grow into another starfish.

I currently run 2 RSM 130 tanks one salty and one running tropical. Been keeping marines for three years and trops off and on 30 years. My first marine tank was set up 25 years ago in the days off under gravel filtration and I couldn't believe how much things had changed...
