I have play sand in my aquarium and have had it in there for years without any problem. I cleaned it really good before I set up the tank though. My method... 5 gallon bucket and a garden hose. I would put in a few scoops of sand and blast it pretty good with the hose and poor off the water...

I ordered a cleaner package from an online site and received trochus snails and cerith snails in the package along with a few other things. The trochus snails took off right away and started doing there job on the aquarium. The cerith snails (26 of them) never moved! I left them in their place...

Every fish has a different personality... but... i have noticed that as long as you feed them well they don't do much damage. Keep him fat and happy! Mine doesn't bother a thing as long as I keep his belly nice and full.
