thanks mog, good advice. looks like i've got a few warnings, like i thought, quite a few of those fish should be in larger groups. also apparently, the torpedo barb will get a fair bit bigger. The thing is, i'm not sure if it is a torpedo barb, it's the same shape and has the same tail...

In the last few days i've picked up a second hand tank, which is set up as a tropical (L30" x W12" x H18", about 29 gallons). As this is my first ever tank, I was wondering whether anyone had any thoughts about the stocking that it's come with, and also whether i'd be okay to add anything else...

Hi all, I just picked my new second hand (first ever) tank. It's 110 litres, which is about US 29 Gallons. I didn't know before i picked it up, but turns out it comes with 20ish fish! It's a tropical set up, and has come with what i've tentatively identified as: 8 neon tetras 1 zebra...

i do like the zebras, also cardinal and neon tetras as well, even though everyone seems to have them lol :)

Thanks for the advice guys, good of you to help out a newbie. I had noticed you've both got similar stocking, it looks like you've both got a nice mix of sizes, types, and colours. I'm not stuck on the danios, so i might do some research and go for something similar. Really looking forward to...

sorry homedog, celestial pearl danios. i think they grow to about half an inch, so maybe they would. i think they like quite planted tanks like the rams, but i'm not sure whether that would make a difference... more research needed i guess lol!

like the look of the orange laser corries! would bolivian rams be less likely to eat cpds than the other cichlids? If so, are there any fish of around the same size that would look good and definitely wouldn't eat smaller fish? i might have more luck than i thought in tracking cpds down when...

Thanks allabout, just had a quick check online, really like the look of the guppies and the apistogramma cichlids! Is this a tropical tank? I also really like the look of celestial pearl danios, but i've got the impression that these could be quite hard to track down. might be a bit ambitious...

... good point. i've heard that 29 gallons should be okay for a single one, but i don't want it having trouble turning round if the width isn't right. I'll have to have a think. From what i've been reading, goldfish put quite a heavy load on the tank anyway like allaboutfish mentioned...
