I am not an expert on this but I've been told and have read that Prime can give false positive ammonia results. Do a google search and look up False positive test results using Prime and API test kits.
Oh I bet he'd like the shrimp! All very colorful fish suggestions. At least I'll have a bit of an idea going into the LFS. I will have to look and see the care of shrimp but I do like that idea for him. And he can still have fish too!
well .. he is 5 so they have to be "interesting. He has picked out pink/black gravel. He likes pink. I want them to be hardy, meaning not minding if he taps on the tank. There probably won't be any live plants.
I've recently finished a fishless cycle on a 10gal tank for my grandson. He is only 5. I'm looking for ideas to stock this tank for him. I've never had a 10gal. So I'm really not aware of what can/cannot be put in one. I do NOT want to trust my LFS on this one. But that is where I need to...
Try adding a pre-filter sponge. I just went to my LFS and got one. Its really kind of nice too because when you do your water change you can take it off and rinse it. It helps cut down on all the poop and extra food from getting into the filter.
It is hard to wait for those nitrates. I'm cycling a 10gal for my grandson and my nitrites are off the charts! Along with the nitrates. I'm still feeding the tank. I'm hoping one day soon No nitrites! so i can set it up at his house for him.
if these die you could also try a fish that can tolerate higher water temps. I have Rummy noses in with my discus and they can tolerate the higher water temps.
I do feel bad and am sorry for your loss. I am watching the thread to see if the mystery is solved. Seems there is a missing piece to the puzzle somewhere but we just can't help you find it.
I wouldn't worry right now about feeding my bacteria. If your just using test strips this could be way higher than they really show. The fish in the tank and the food your feeding it will feed the bacteria. Please do at least 50% water changes daily. The cycling will come.
*salt at *concentration of 1-2 tablespoons /10 gal. This helps them deal with stress.
This is from a post on Simply Discus QT forum. I'm not sure how it would work for other tropicals.
