    Reef tank ruined

The results are in, TOTAL LOSS. Im going to drain tank and set the rocks and sand out in the sunshine for a week or two and start over. I have sold the surviving critters, 20 lbs of liverock, gorgeous red shrooms, gigantic Xenia colony, hermit crab, encrusting amphillia and a very nice...

    Reef tank ruined

Well, spent most of yesterday doing another 20 gallon pwc. Ammonia was off the charts (well over 8 ppm) but all other leverls were normal. I essentially have a huge new cycle starting. I tried using Kent Marine ammonia detox at very high dosage and threw on an old canister with a bag of Phoz...

    Reef tank ruined

Hi guys, I haven't posted in a while. 4 days ago our new little kitty cat jumped up on the canopy and knocked a full can of flake food into my 100 gal reef. No one was home and it didn't get noticed for hours. By that night ALL the fish were dead. It appears that virtually everything from...

    Salt creep on Power Lines

It's a ground fault interupt circuit and not a ground force interupt. :D I'd be happy, once again, to give anybody detailed info on the subject.

    Chiller recharge

ntswift, refrigerant in a refrigeration or air conditioning system NEVER but NEVER "wears" out. It can certainly combine with contaninents such as water to form destructive acids but as long as it stays clean it never "wears" out. As long as no leaks occur or it gets contaminated the refrigerant...

    Another question on Titanium probe

The short answer is yes. A ground is a ground as long as it "sees" earth through the wiring in your house.

    Chiller recharge

Re: chiller recharge Well, you are right on some points, but, perhaps, a bit mis-informed on others. I happpen to be a licensed in the handling of "refrigerants" (USA, Enironemtal Protection Agency or EPA). Refrigerants are only under 250 to 300 PSI when the unit is on, and, obviously the...

    Possible cheap temp controller...?

I'd proceed with caution. Water will find the smallest crevices. Also, once again, If Iwere submersing ANY electrcial device, I'd use GFI protection and a titanium ground probe.

    Possible cheap temp controller...?

I've thought a million times about a controller to cycle the fan on and off depending on the water temp reading. Both of these look like viable solutions...but...... The first choice, I'd be a bit concernened about the probe submersed in water unless it's rated for submersion. The second choice...

    My Stand SUCKS.

Well, there is at least one other engineer who has posted here I would agree with. Don't attempt it. Even if you were able to move it you'll stress the corner joints and set yourself up for a future leak. Use plastic tubs, drain all the water, leave sand in the bottom and then move.

    night life

No, not the sandy beach bar kind. I have a red-lens flashlight and love to look after hours. The past week or so I've been staying up about 1 to 2 hours after the lights turn off. I'm simply amazed at the life that comes out to play. Reddish looking worms sticking out of a rock and feeding on...

    Aquatic Gardens slat mix

I've been seeing a brand of salt called Aquatic Gardens premium salt mix in my local Petco. It's $49.99 for a 150 gallon mix and is clearly listed as a product of China. Meanwhile the 160 gallon mix of Instant Ocean sits right next to it for $62.99. I'm a little leery. It seems to me salt is one...

    Bashful Scallop

I have one that is reclusive also. My lfs regulary has them for about $10. In his book A Pocket Guide to Marine Invertebrates, Dr. Ronald Shimek says they seek out dim areas under rocks or in caves. And need lots of phytoplankton. He also lists them as good aquarium animals

    Chiller noise

May I ask, what brand and size of chiller is it?
