Wow, thanx chrismac, that is a lot of information, i do have barbs in my tank which you say may be infected, will just have to be vigilant. i have recently started feeding my fish with processed brine shrimp, do you think this introduced this parasite?

cat litter sounds good, but i have managed to keep plants in my tank with just normal gravel, though they come in little plastic pots they soon (2-3weeks) root into the gravel. all i add is 5 ml of plant grow per fortnight, though they probably don't need it, just don't want them to die ...
