    You might be able to buy an aquarium frame online or possibly a framing kit? A metal frame is the best in my view as it avoids all the shrinking /swelling problems of timber.     Is it a squeeking/ knocking noise or a splashing noise? If its not making a mess then the splashing noise is good as it agitates the water surface, assisting in oxygen being disolved and carbon dioxide evolving back into the air. Squeeking/Knocking noise may need to get some new parts.

    Watts per gallon is also dependant on the amount of live aquatic plants you have in your tank. If you have lots of plants, then you will need more light as the plants produce oxygen when they photosynthesis in the light and produce CO2 when they respire in the dark.     I forgot to say that we have a 35 gallon tank sitting on a coffee table at home ... just the right height for a toddler to get their hand in! I need to build a new taller stand and would appreciate hearing how you go!
