I don't know much about the blasting sand that you are looking at but the sand I found that was sold as blasting sand was not whisker safe. As in for catfish. I love mine. I only use it to fill since my python empties faster. I have 10 tanks in my basement and I do them all in one evening. I have 2 on the main floor and get those done the same day. That is if I'm not cleaning filters or get sidetracked somehow.

I wouldn't mix it with gravel. It would be near impossible to clean. Do a search there are tons of sand threads here.

Not sure if anyone mentioned but malaysian trumpet snails or assassin snails or a few other sorts of snails can stir the sand so gas pockets don't form. Cheap fast breeding burrowing snails would be a good snack for your puffer too.

Sand substrate is great. You can add root tabs near the roots for the nutrients they need.
