Thanks for your suggestions guys! Unfortunately I'm way to lazy to for elbow grease so I used my drill with a masonry bit and drilled off the parts that were gunked up. The oil didn't penetrate very deeply. LMAO

So I got some rocks for my 55g and I put them in the oven to sterilize. After it was done I took them all out and one of the pieces has a giant blob of oven grease on it. How do I get rid of it safely or can I just stick it in the aquarium?

I have a ghetto version that involves a normal gravel vac to the tub and a facet adapter to the tubing.

Ah ok. Thanks guys, I'll change out as much water as possible and see what happens. Would it be ok to use a smaller tank to cycle the filter? Like say a 10 gallon? It be easier to do those 100% water changes.

So I'm fishless cycling my 55g. I dosed it up to 5ppm and let it sit for a week, then I read no ammonia so I dosed in 3mL (should put it around 3ppm). This was last week. Yesterday I put in 3ppm of ammonia and today its all gone. The problem is that my nitrites are like 25ish ppm (1mL of tank...

haha no, they turn really purple but its hard to gauge how much purpler. I put in 1mL of tank water and 4mL of conditioned water and it still read 5ppm. Yeah jlk, I'm using temp matched and conditioned water. Thanks guys!

steer14, I seem to have the same problem...my nitrites are super high. By my calculations its over 25 ppm... I dosed it a day ago with 4ppm ammonia and its all gone now. Nitrates about 80ppm. So just do a massive water change and keep the ammonia up?
