are you sure its not your crabs eating eachother and snails as they do this for dominance we have kept gobies for years and its always the crabs that eat each other we have only 6 out of 30 hermits we need to keep replacing them it sounds strange that a gobie could even kill a crab or a snail...

do you remove all the uneaten food out of your tank after each feed as a build up of this would cause a smell. Any dead animals, plants, corals etc.....

no not really if your water is good and they feel happy it will happen, if youve got alot of hermits it could have molted already and they could have ate the shell, bristles would eat it too so dont worry they are quite hardy little things
