Never thought of that, but now that I think of it, they're meant for paintball guns, and usually run sideways on the gun. Should be okay!

just an update to let you guys know this design worked flawlessly. If there is any interest, I can share pics, let me know :) I ended up using one tupperware, an aqua lifter, and some 1/4" tubing. I have myself a working autotop off that is virtually fail-proof

Hmm strange.. I can't help you with the filter unless you have some pics you're willing to share. It might be worth looking into that issue first in this case to see if RO water eventually helps

Technically, if he wants to "cut down" on the waste, then he'd have to get rid of the puffer. Since that's not an option, he'd have to manage the existing waste instead. Vaccuming substrate? Increased filtration? Why would purigen not help? In my experience, I cleaned waste can lead to algae...

You should take a look at the "guide to fish less cycling" posted on this website. It's a great resource. I think maybe your spike may be due to the initial introduction of fish. If your bio filter can't handle the ammonia in 24 hrs, then it's possible your cycle was not fully completed

Are you using RO water, or conditioned tap water? Even with regular water changes, if you use tap? The phosphates will continue to rise over time and algae becomes a real issue. Using RO water will help I think

Make a purigen reactor. This will definitely solve your problem :)
