They can probably tolerate high salt content for short amounts of time but I wouldn't go any higher then 1.015 to keep them healthy and encourage breeding.

I use a large one in my community tank for gas exchange, the shrimp and bulldog pleco I have are happier for it.

There is a misconception that bottom feeders clean up, they eat fish food just like any other fish.. They won't eat fish waste etc... Make sure you get a good gravel cleaner :)
