    Snails - Friend or Foe?

I was able to remove a bunch of them tonight. A somewhat tedious process given how small they are. How big do they get if allowed to mature? The biggest ones I'm seeing are about 1/8". I thought about maybe getting an assassin snail or two but what would they feed on after the MTS's have been...

    Snails - Friend or Foe?

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will start plucking them out of the tank as they make themselves accessible.

    Snails - Friend or Foe?

I have recently being seeing a number of very small snails in my planted tank. They are about 1/8" to 3/16" long. I'm guessing they came in as eggs on one of the plants. I looked around on the net but couldn't find any info on any that looked like them. I'm trying to find out if they are...

Contemplating This Treatment Process for Ich

I'm going to try the path of least resistance and try the heat method you guys are suggesting. I'll keep a close eye on progress. If I have to, I can move on to the TTM method if the heat doesn't do the trick. Thanks for the feedback.

Contemplating This Treatment Process for Ich

I want to make sure that I eradicate it. Will raising the temp kill off any cysts that may be in the substrate? Also I didn't mention it earlier but there is a batch of 2 week old fry in the main tank (in a separate nursery tank). Will the elevated temp bother the fry? Raising the temp would...

Contemplating This Treatment Process for Ich

While feeding the fish today I noticed white spots on a few of the black neon tetras and my male swordtail. Unfortunately it looks as though the tank has Ich. Because the tank is a planted tank with shrimp, I can't dose medicine (Cupramine) directly into the tank. This make things a little more...

Best HOB Filter for 55 gal?

As others have said, I would check out the Aquaclear or the Fluval C series. They are both made by Hagen and are very similar but do have some differences. I have the C series on a few tanks and am very happy with them. They are about a close to a canister filter you can get without getting a...

Green hair algae- the constant battle

I had an outbreak of GHA. But the excel made short work of it. No GHA to be found now.

Green hair algae- the constant battle

That explains why most of my anacharis died off. Oh well, wife never did like the anacharis anyway.

Green hair algae- the constant battle

Try dosing some Excel. I was speaking with a rep from Seachem at a coral swap and during the course of our conversation we got on the subject of hair algae. He had told me that one of the side effects of Excel was that it kills algae. I tried it and he was right. Within a couple of weeks of...

    Fishless cycle problems. Advice needed.

Hi Barliman, I'm no expert at fishless cycling but I happening to be cycling my 29g right now and I'm also using Dr. Tim's ammonium chloride and Seachem's Stability. I have noticed similar results as you have as far as the ammonia level's being low and nitrite being fairly high. To me it seems...

Water Turnover Rate for Freshwater Tank

I ended up ordering a Fluval C3 HOB filter. It should give me just over 5 water changes per hour. The C series is very similar to the AquaClears. Same parent company. I liked how it was setup like a canister filter and provides the ability to customize the filter media. I would have went with a...

Water Turnover Rate for Freshwater Tank

Thanks for the replies. I will start off with a 5X turnover rate and see how it goes from there. If that doesn't seem to do the trick, I'll move up to either adding another filter or a larger filter.

Water Turnover Rate for Freshwater Tank

Need help deciding what size filter would be best for my 29 gallon tank. I have read that you can never have too much water turnover but there must be a point when it becomes excessive/non productive. Also no need to pay more for filter media for a larger filter than what you can take advantage...

Substrate Recommendation for Low Tech Planted Tank

I'm currently in the planning and acquiring stages for a new 29g planted tank. As this is my first attempt at the use of live plants, I would like to keep it a low tech, easy to maintain approach. No CO2 for the time being. I have been doing some reading up on plant substrates and would...

    Saltwater and CO2 Question

Bribo thanks for the response. May have to evaluate whether or not I want to invest in a pressurized CO2 system based on the lack of need for it in a SW build. May have to go a low tech route on the planted tank.

    Saltwater and CO2 Question

I'm currently gathering equipment for a 75g planted tank set up. I eventually plan on making this tank a saltwater setup down the road. In acquiring the various pieces and parts that make a tank run, I've been trying to get things that I can use on both the FW and the SW tank. I realize that...

Are Top Fin Tanks Made By Aqueon?

Update: I placed a call to Petsmart's corporate office to see if they could tell me who makes the Top Fin labeled tanks for them. The person I spoke to said that they couldn't divulge that information out of concern for losing sales to other vendors. I also placed a call to Aqueon with the same...

Are Top Fin Tanks Made By Aqueon?

I just bought a 65 gallon tank by Aqueon and after doing some reading on the forum I maybe be better off with a 75 gallon tank. I plan on starting off the tank as a freshwater setup but eventually I would like to build a saltwater setup down the road. Petsmart has the 75 gallon on sale and...
