    red platy ratio

is there a male/ female ratio i should adhere to with platies? i know they are rampant breeders, i just don't know if a male would harrass a single female to death.

Pix of my 54 gallon corner tank

that's a great looking tank. i nearly bought one similar to that a few months ago but my wife wouldn't have been too pleased. so i opted for an xbox360 instead. if we ever move to a bigger house i'm sure i'll get one then. good luck with the tank

    betta and live bloodworm

sadly he was dead when i got home from work this evening. the bloating that he experienced was probably just over eating as it subsided daily. after 3 days he was back to his normal shape. i've only had him for about 6 months, he wasn't even fully grown, he still had a fair bit to go. alsa...

    betta and live bloodworm

are live bloodworm a compatible food for a betta? i put a small bag of them into my tank nearly 2 weeks ago. unfortunatly, i didn't realise that feeding the entire bag would result in over feeding all the fish. the betta was extremely bloated, so i fasted the tank until all sizes were returned...

suggestions on a small bottom feeder

thanks for the advice. the part i'm going to follow at the moment is not to add. i think i'll wait till the betta calms down a bit, or i can house the fish properley. either way, i'll do my homework before adding any more fish.

suggestions on a small bottom feeder

can anyone give me some ideas on a bottom feeder that doesn't grow too big. i have an 18g tank with 1 male betta, 1 hill stream loach, 4 white clouds and 1 male fancy guppy. only the betta isn't fully grown. i know there are a few discrepancies with the compatability of some of these fish...

Ho often to you test for Ammonia and Nitrite?

i used to check on a weekly basis but when they never changed from 0ppm i decided it was a waste of time. now i check the nitrate levels maybe 2/3 times a month or if things don't look good in there.

    Could I have done something?

one of my white clouds has done the same but without the fatality. he managed to spit out the chunk, but then went after it again and got himself in the same predicament. he eventually managed to swallow it. since then, i've made sure i've kept the food small. as long as you learn something from...

    Help!!!!

check the temp with another thermometer. i've had similar problems recently myself. mine stemmed from the recent heatwave and a dodgy thermometer. the thermometer i was using at the time now reads 39C in my coldwater tank while my heated tank reads 27C. verify your temps before trying to alter...

what do you do with your baby fish?

i'd leave them in the community tank. survival of the fittest and all that. i'm still undecided whether or not to introduce female guppies into my tank to breed just for the sake of feeder fish. i could do it morally but the problem i have is that i have a planted tank and maybe more would...

    cooling down the aquarium

i tried blowing the air across the surface of the water but to no avail. to be honest, i think the fan i used might have been too small for the summer temps we were getting, it is only a small one, about 1foot diameter.

    cooling down the aquarium

check that you thermometer is correct. i had a digital thermo reading of 37 C(98.6 F) in my heated tank so i turned the heater and lights off and tried several methods of cooling. ice, fan and lid off. none of these worked. then i used a different thermometer, a traditional 'mercury' one and...

    cleaning sand

i'm thinking about changing to sand as a substrate, but i'm concerned that cleaning it might be a problem. i currently siphon the gravel that i have and small bits of that find their way into my bucket. i'm convinced that all sand that i siphoned would find it's way into the bucket. how exactly...
