    My PPS-Pro experiment

Spent about 5 hours working on the tank today. A lot of the plants had really long bare stalks because the few leaves they would grow got all covered in BBA or the fish would nibble and tear them, so I would trim them. They also seemed to be stretching themselves up towards the surface (greater...

Thanks Fresh2o! The tank is in my office but right before I set up the CO2 I was sent to a client site and have been there for the last month and a half. My colleagues kindly feed the fish and keep an eye on them but I'm not around enough for close monitoring. I initially started out with the...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

It's been a while. I stopped posting in this thread because I got frustrated and felt like I wasn't making any progress - despite my best efforts the plants didn't grow well and collected a lot of algae. But on the 31st of July I set up a CO2 system and since then I have seen a marked...

Hah, yeah would have been a little bit of everything then. Filter clean, filter floss replacement, dying algae, some filter bacteria killed by H2O2 Sent using Aquarium Advice app

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Did a water test today around 1pm and the ammonia was at 0.25ppm. I suspect the bio filter took a hit with the combined filter clean and H2O2 tank treatment. Dosed prime immediately, then did a water change after work hours. Would dying algae contribute to ammonia, or just nitrates?

    Neglected tank

According to the API website: So it's not going to deny the bio filter of food. For the sake of your fish I would use it, 4ppm is a lot. Be aware that the ammo lock neutralized ammonia will still read on test kits.

Thanks Delapool, I'm excited to see how it looks once it's filled in a bit. I ordered some more plants online today, expected to arrive late next week. Hygrophila corymbosa stricta x2 Hygrophila polysperma x2 Twisted vallisneria x3 Java moss x1 Pictures from today Algae has gone dusty...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Oh yeah, that photo from Mon 2016-05-09 has an anubias and one of the java ferns missing from their respective rocks. They got dislodged during the 90% water change and I didn't notice until later. They're still alive :)

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Week #6 (Sat 2016-05-14) My team moved to a different floor on Friday 2016-05-06, which meant moving the tank as well. It got a 90% water change in the process. Growth has been okay, but I'm still having issues with BBA. I've seen a new leaf come through on one of the crypts and a sword, and...

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

I got my TDS meter today as well! Tap was around 70, tank currently at 100ish. Tank TDS is low because my team moved floors today, so I effectively did a 95% water change. Sent using Aquarium Advice app

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Just tested phosphates and nitrates. Phosphates at 2ppm and nitrates at 80. I don't think I can get away with no water changes after all, at least not at current planting levels. The goldfish just produce too much waste. The tank's going to be getting a 90% wc this week anyway because my team is...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Some closeups of the java ferns. OneFish wanted her picture taken There's some BBA around the roots that I can't seem to get rid of. I've hit it with several H2O2 spot treatments. It's gone a kind of dusty color, not sure if that means it's dying or just damaged.

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Week #3 (Sat 2016-04-23): (A bit late getting this up - been busy) I tested the water today, phosphates at 1ppm, nitrates around 40ppm. I said I wasn't going to do any more water changes back in week 1.5 (introduction of gas-rich tap water benefits algae in a non-CO2 tank), but I want to keep...

    Fish tank

The great thing about lemon juice, vinegar, or a citric acid solution is that if you get a bit in the tank you'll probably be ok. You can even feed orange pieces to goldfish* so citric acid and lemon would be quite safe as long as you didn't go squirting some into the tank. On the other hand...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

I think my tank is 45cm (17.7 in) tall, so looking at the first graph would be about 15 PAR for one T8 bulb. So ~30 PAR for my LED fixture. Which puts me right on the border between low and medium. Currently the fixture is right on the glass, though I do have some little legs that will raise it...

Is it hard and flaky? If so, it's probably deposits from hard water/dissolved ferts.

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Thanks for the interest guys :-) I've never been sure whether it would be classed as a high, medium or low light tank. The lighting is a 29W Aqua One EcoGlo LED that is allegedly equivalent to 2x T8 bulbs. I run it from 8am to 5pm, but the lights in the office would be on past 8pm, and...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Hi Thrills22, thanks for commenting :) It's certainly difficult keeping plants with goldfish, I've been taking a bit of a scattergun approach to plant choices in the hope that something sticks. As far as I see it there are two avenues to success: thick strong leaves that don't taste good and...

    My PPS-Pro experiment

Week #2 (Tues 2016-04-19) Much of this week already covered in #1.5. Yesterday: The elodea I planted got pulled up by the goldfish, I had to re plant it more securely. I took a reading of nitrates and phosphates, the phosphates were low so I upped micros from 1ml to 2ml, and non-nitrogen...

What Did You do With Your Tank Today?

Fed the goldfish Repashy Soilent Green for the first time. I think the cubes I cut may be a little large. I think they liked it, but they didn't go crazy for it. Tested nitrates and phosphate to see how the PPS-Pro is going. Phosphate was low so I upped the micros and non-nitrogen macros...

Goldfish has red spot on both of his gill covers!

I wouldn't trust that filter unless you know exactly what it's rated for and it's been serviced/maintained according to schedule. The Quick Start and Stress Zyme are probably unnecessary in a cycled tank, and a water conditioner would be a very good idea. You've tested ammonia and nitrite, have...

Goldfish has red spot on both of his gill covers!

Next guess would be bacterial but I really don't know enough about that to say. Hopefully someone else will know. What's your water change schedule like, and how much do you replace? Are you using a water conditioner? Sent using Aquarium Advice app

Goldfish has red spot on both of his gill covers!

What did you use to test the ammonia and nitrate? Paper strips are notoriously unreliable and could have given you a false reading. You have a lot of fish in that tank, if you do indeed have 0ppm ammonia I would expect nitrates to be very high. Not sure if that could cause the discolouration...
