How to prevent disease after scale trauma?

Salt is a great idea! Clean water is the best idea! If you're really really worried I would do 80 - 100% waterchanges the next few days and add a 0.39% salt concentration to the tank. This is done by one tablespoon of aquarium salt (sea salt) per gallon. Best of luck!

Clean water and more clean water! Also, you can dose Melafix safely in your main tank. We wouldn't want to stress Thanksgiving out anymore by moving him.

So, you've treated him with a looooot of stuff. I would just take it easy on him. Change the water as frequently as you can. Add salt at 1 teaspoon per gallon. Let's give him a break with some clean water. I would recommend consulting an aquatic vet in your area.

    Sick goldfish

Wow. Okay...There are a lot of problems going on all at once... Let's start with the largest! Water quality. While you have an awesome sized tank for your fish (assuming the plecos are still teeny) you have an ammonia problem. Your tank wasn't cycled properly when you first obtained it and...

    [First Post] Ranchu missing eye??

Do large water changes for the next few days (80% - 100%). Clean water is key to an infection free future. Adding one tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon will raise the salinity level in the tank to approximately 0.3%. This will help his normal bodily functions and thus allow his immune...

    [First Post] Ranchu missing eye??

Are there any fake plants or decorations in your tank? Or do you have a hang-on-back-filter with a hard plastic in-take tube that looks "stabby"? This had to happen somehow...I would take anything fake out of your tank. I would also rubber band some filter floss around your intake tube (a...

Ohh! Interesting. Thank you for the update! I'm glad you finally got around to speaking to a professional. Us forum goers are here to help but, second opinions and people with lots of experience are always a good idea. Especially when the forum goers get the diagnosis wrong. Oxytetracycline is a...

Valuable Information on Fish Handling and Sedation

I don't think you watched the entirety of the handling videos. He explicitly explains why nets should not be used to hold fish. He does give great advice in suggestions we keep the fish in water as much as possible. He says that his company has done studies saying that a Koi held out of water...

Okay...with Goldfish. That has been my experience. In small tanks (5 - 20 gallons) the ammonia goes up quickly. Even with only one Goldfish. Oh Mebbid. Why do we disagree on so much? The reason why I told Copplanes to change the water because I assumed she put in the concentration I...

It needs to be an epsom salt dip! Not an all the time additive.

And believe me, you'll see his poop. Betta fish poop is pretty big for a small fish haha. As soon as he does poop please take a picture and describe any details that the picture may not be showing. Fish poop tells us a lot about what's going on!

Thank the Lord, he's looking better! What does the medicine bottle recommend on treatment time?? An epsom salt bath would be a good idea (for his constipation) . I think I posted up above on how to carry that out! We also have to make sure we kill the parasite that caused all this in the first...

She has put a bit of salt in to help the betta's immune system while he's getting better. We also did a salt dip before treatment. @Copplanes I forgot to say that you can totally do one again. Salt only kills certain bacteria but, it's also useful for stripping the slime coat off a fish so...

Haha, yah plants are hard to work with. A great starting point is looking up The Green Machine on youtube. I learned a lot from them! I tried to plant ans be all cool but, my goldfish keep eating the plants ಠ_ಠ There's a reason they only have tropicals in their tanks haha. Good bacteria...at...

While that post was really informative and interesting...choosing the route of subjecting your fish to toxic water over being patient is just not cool. It only takes a few hours for ammonia to build up. At least for the fish-in stocking method. In Copplanes case, she really doesn't have a...

Must be nice! There's a few fish societies down there I wish I could join. Sorry about mixing up your gender! Anywhooooo. First off I would like to say that netting a fish is a no go. Nets should only be used as a way to herd a fish where you would like them to go. You can also do this with...

The reason why I suggested a 100% water change daily is because if Copplanes is a busy student or has a day time job etc, he can't be home all day to take care of the fish. I personally wouldn't be able to. If he does water changes every 24 hours there isn't going to be that much of a pH...

Not feeling comfortable about cutting your fish's fin is totally normal! When someone first told me about it two years ago I thought they were crazy! Anywho, if you don't want to trim the bad stuff you should at least get some hydrogen peroxide on the ends of his fins. Don't do the swab in the...

Oh and I finally remembered to look up the food I was telling you about: San Francisco Bay Brand: Bloodworms Bettas are so small I would feed one bloodworm at a time. Their stomach is as big as their eye. Which is really small haha. When I owned a betta I also had goldfish. I was lucky that...
