Female betta and male dwarf gourami?

Yeah I had another dg in there with him when I first got him, that lasted all of a day. The glofish are too fast for him to bother much, and the cories stay out of his way. He's certainly a strong personality.

Female betta and male dwarf gourami?

Well, the betta bowl is a 1 gallon little desk tank that actually has a little undergravel filter in it (not that I imagine it actually cycles worth anything) so it could be a lot worse. She's having a great time in the 10 gallon though. She and gourami did take a few swipes at each other at...

Female betta and male dwarf gourami?

Eh, I got impatient and put her in the community tank, with some careful observation. Betta seemed overwhelmed with the space and company, and nosed at all of her tank mates (she followed one of the cories around with fascination for a good 10 minutes) but seems to have settled in fine. Her...

Female betta and male dwarf gourami?

I'm babysitting an out-of-state dormmate's female betta over winter break, and seeing as how she's currently housed in one of those teeny little betta bowls, I'm considering tossing her in my community tank to give her some space. Only caveat is the male dwarf gourami in the tank. Can this...

    Leaving for Christmas Break

Double check with your RA to make sure you can do this. In my dorm everything has to be unplugged over the hols.

New tank with aggressive fish problems

If you still want to have a pleco, there are some species of pleco that don't get as large as the "common pleco" species do. I recommend the clown pleco (Panaque maccus), which stays under 4" and is very pretty to boot. My local Petsmart carries them for around $7. I have one in my community...

    Ich and Pregnant Guppies?

The Diseased Wonder™ started looking really bad so I went ahead an euth'd her in a shot of everclear. Thank goodness for alcoholic dormmates. Another guppy has a milk mustache going on. I hope this Maracyn does the trick....

    filter fry guard

I just stretched pantyhose over my filter intake and rubberbanded it on. As long as you stretch it out right, it won't affect your flow at all, though you do have to watch for excessive stuff getting caught in it. Pantyhose is good for makeshift breeding/isolation nets, too, with a wire hanger...

    Ich and Pregnant Guppies?

Here's my game plan right now: it's an 8 gallon tank, but I got the Maracyn with the 10 gallon packets, so I'm over-medicating a bit. Tomorrow morning I'll do a 60-75% water change, then dose tomorrow's dose along with more salt and MelaFix to replace what gets taken out. Lather, rinse, repeat...

    Ich and Pregnant Guppies?

Okay, so the ich female also has cottonmouth disease, so now I've added Maracyn and MelaFix to the mix in the tank. On top of that, when I came back from PetCo with the Maracyn, I had several fry! The most pregnant female (not the diseased wonder) popped out 5 more while I watched (too cool) and...

Guppy Cotton Mouth: Bacteria or Fungus?

So that pesky guppy that came in with ich also has cotton mouth and it passing it around the the other fish. Clearly this fish was a mistake, I will not be purchasing from that same store again. Anyways, I need to dose for the cotton mouth before the whole tank gets wiped out. What do you...

    Ich and Pregnant Guppies?

It's usually at ~76 ish, but it was around 70 this morning when I saw the spots because my roommate opened the window (right by my desk, on which the tank sits) last night and then forgot to close it. I've done the heat treatment before, so I'm not too worried, and I've had a chat with the...

    Ich and Pregnant Guppies?

Okay, so the guppy tank has ich. My bad, I put a new one in there, and now that one has a couple white spots on it. I'm raising the temperature right now (we're at 76 and rising--still a ways to go) and adding in some salt. Hopefully this will be nipped in the bud. Here's the question: a couple...

    Bare 25gal

It's pretty hard to over-filter a tank. :) Instead of moving over tetras to cycle the tank, why not just "seed" it with filter media from the 16 gallon? A lot easier on the fish that way. As far as plants go, sand is not an ideal substrate, and plecos are notorious for tearing up plants. I'd go...

Guppy courtship? Or aggression between new tankmates?

Yeah, it's looking more and more like courtship. He's quit the nipping and just wiggles by her all the time now, while she nibbles the rocks, completely oblivious to his attentions. It's actually turned very endearing. He's trying just so hard.... :P I hope the females don't die. It's been a...

Raising two oscar together: doomed to failure?

My boyfriend and I are upgrading some of our fish soon, and we've been throwing around the idea of starting an oscar tank in the soon-to-be-vacated digs. We want to get a pair of juvenile oscars (the smallest size at the lfs, so we can "raise" them) and have them grow together, hopefully to form...

    New Tank Question / Picture

That would probably be alright, though I would get a pH test kit and maybe monitor to see if you need to pull the rocks out. If you want a cheap light colored substrate, I recommend going to your local pool supply store and getting a bag of pool filter sand.

    New Tank Question / Picture

If it's crushed coral, it could have a detrimental effect on the pH of the tank, depending on what you want to keep in it.

Guppy courtship? Or aggression between new tankmates?

I should mention that the tank has a centerpiece decor full of hidey-holes and such and that she hasn't tried to hide or anything. But the option is there.

    Betta and tadpoles?

Belated follow-up: In case anyone is interested in how this turned out, you can in fact keep a betta with tadpoles. He nibbled one when I first put him in, but it must have tasted horrible because I swear he made a face and has never done it since. He's not even that docile of a betta, as all...

Guppy courtship? Or aggression between new tankmates?

So one of my dormmates called me up a few days ago, saying they were tired of the tank their (now ex-) girlfriend had gotten them, and would I (as the resident "fish person") take them before he flushed them and trashed the aquarium? And so I came into possession of a 6 gallon bowfront desk...
