As far as I know fresh and saltwater nitrification bacteria are different. When you add the salt you will kill all your freshwater bacteria. And will have to start from scratch. I just recently converted a freshwater tank to saltwater and watched the cycle go through its steps all over again.

Another little trick is to soak the skimmer in vinegar either full strength or 50/50 with water. Use the clear white vinegar. Soak overnight then rinse really really well. This should shorten your break in time to perhaps a few days. Don't touch the inside of the skimmer with your fingers after...
