Moving long distance with our fish

I've searched the forum and I haven't found anything that fits with what we're doing this coming July. We're moving, state to state. The trip is about 15 total hours on the road and we have an overnight stop along the way. I won't be able to set up a tank at the new location before we get...

    Betta advice on tank mates???

The betta is pretty much ignoring the rasboras. The rasboras aren't sure what to think of the betta but they leave him alone. The betta is more interested in his own reflection than anything else in the tank. So far, so good!

    Filter Broke, help!

Assuming you're sure you have power at the outlet that the filter is plugged into, the obvious solution is go get a new filter. Sorry, I'm not trying to be a smart azz. I'm just not sure what else you can do. I keep a spare filter on hand just in case. Granted, it's an inexpensive HOB filter...

    Betta advice on tank mates???

We're going betta shopping this morning. We'll be adding him to a 10g tank along with 5 harlequin rasboras that have been in the tank for about six weeks now. I'll let you know how it goes. The rasboras are very cool little fish on their own by the way! A very active schooling fish. Lots of fun...

Can you help a newbie with water levels?

My understanding of the API test kit is that he low end pH test maxes out at 7.6. The high end test can show a 7.6 result (kind of orange color) but since the OP is able to read 8.4 on the high end test I would think 8.4 is the pH reading. If my understanding is not correct, please let me know...

Need help choosing a canister filter please.

I was just looking at Hydor Pro last night. I think I'm going to try one when we set up our next tank.

    Again a fresh start

Just as a comparison, I cycled a 20 gallon tank starting with 3 juvenile cherry barbs. I have the API Master Test kit and I was doing a partial water change about every 3-4 days based on ammonia or nitrite level, it just depended on where it was in the cycle. There were a few days when levels...

Which fish are good fish for cycling a tank

I cycled a 20 gallon tank with three cherry barbs. We still have them nearly a year later.

Fishless cycling in progress, big drop in nitrates overnight

I brought the test kit from home and read nitrate at 5 PPM using that kit as well. I'm thinking the 80 PPM readings that I saw were not accurate. The cycle seems to be on track. Ammonia drops from 4 PPM to near zero in less than 24 hours and nitrites read 5 PPM or higher (I think they're off...

Fishless cycling in progress, big drop in nitrates overnight

I just did a third test and got 5 PPM nitrates again. If nitrates are over what the test can show (160 PPM per the chart) would the test show the 160 PPM color? The reddish brown? Regardless, I'll do the 50% water change tomorrow since the PH is starting to drop and I'll also bring the kit...

Fishless cycling in progress, big drop in nitrates overnight

Yeah, I thought I did the test incorrectly too. That's why I did the second test (carefully) and got the same result. I thought I may have added drops from the wrong bottle but that wasn't the case. Water changes at this office aren't easy to do so it would be nice if I have a water change...

Fishless cycling in progress, big drop in nitrates overnight

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I shake that number 2 bottle like a madman for at least forty seconds then the test tube for another one minute after adding the ten drops from the number 2 bottle. I've been using the API kit for about a year on our tank at home and I've never seen this happen. The...

Fishless cycling in progress, big drop in nitrates overnight

I've been doing a fishless cycle on a new 10 gallon tank we're setting up at our office. I'm testing daily using the API freshwater kit. The cycle was going great and on track per the "almost complete guide to fishless cycling" FAQ on this site. Last night for some reason the nitrate level...

    First Aquarium

I have several cherry barbs and one thick lipped sunset gourami in our 20 gallon tank. They all get along great. The gourami is awesome. He'll sit in the palm of my hand if I let him. He always comes over to see what I'm doing during tank maintenance. This is our third gourami in less than one...

    Glofish Keep Dying New Aquarium

I use an instant read digital meat thermometer to get a reading from the tank then I hold the same thermometer under the running water at the sink and adjust until it's the same temp then fill the bucket.

    Adding hatchet fish

Thanks! We do have a lid but the opening for the HOB filter is larger than it needs to be. I'll cover that somehow.

    Adding hatchet fish

My son loves hatchet fish and he'd like to add 5 to our 20g high tank. The tank has been up 2 months and is cycled. He currently has 5 cherry barbs and 1 dwarf gourami. Would it be OK to add all 5 hatchet fish at one time or should we split it up? I know they'll be happier in a group.
