When you changed the filter AND the gravel, you lost most if not all of your bacteria. Keeping the old media from the old fitler and using it in the new one would have helped. Also some of the old gravel could have been been put in a stocking that could have been kept in the tank without mixing...

Actually the smaller the tank the quicker they become room temp. A 7,10,or 15 watt would be fine imo. Also make sure the room doesn't get too warm. There again the tank will warm quicker.

On the AP nitrate test, be sure to shake bottle #2 as if shaking a can of spray paint or your kids..lol It will give false readings if not shaken well for 30 sec. before putting it in the tube and then the tube for 1 min.

A good heater and a good thermometer! And a water test kit if you don't have one.

IMO...AquaClear 70.....I run those on my 37 and 30 and water is crystal clear.

Crush up the flake food like normal(should be really small) put it in a salt/pepper shaker. Then ask him to just shake it twice every time he feeds the other fish. Maybe that wouldn't be to hard for him.

My head/tail light tetras(6) school really good. Sometimes they even join in with the scissor tail rasboras.

If you look at the filter and it has a plastic insert, it should have the word Tetra on it.(mine does) If it does then any tetra or whisper refill for a medium size i believe will fit. I get them from Walmart 3 refills for about $5.

goto bigals.com or drsfostersmith.com or another supply site. Look at all the filter(probably under power filters if its hob), find one like yours then compare the sizes of the one like yours. Maybe that way you can find out the make/model to take to the lfs to get the filter(s) or whatever is...

What are you using to de-chlorinate the water with? Prime is the best Some de-chlorinators will show some ammonia but not that high. Prime will not.

If the ammonia is 7-8 then do a 75% pwc ASAP Nitrate is ok for now and the nitrite is high, but a pwc will bring everything down. The ammonia might be spiking because your at the end of the cycle but thats a big spike. How much and fast did it reach 7-8? Do a pwc now and another one about 6-8...

Like SCFatz said DONT clean the filter til after it's cycled. Nor do any gravel vacs. What is your am/nitrite/nitrate readings? You'd have to be feeding ALOT of excess food to get a "crazy" ammonia reading above .25 or .5 Not knowing your numbers, it would be a safe bet that in 2 weeks or...

Re: "Hagen Elite sumersible heater" - not submersi Does that mean it's ok for vertical? I think for safety reasons(Canadian law maybe) that it can't be used horizontal. under water is under water. I doubt it would really care if it was even upside down.
