If you chose to go the UV route try looking into a powerhead. It should be a small one where the flow is much slower. Powerheads are not that expensive. You should get out of the store with one that is less than $30.

Be aware of the fact that the puffers eat snails and various other inverts. I had not bought a clean-up crew and decided to get some snails. Only one made it overnight with my valentino at them. One snail didnt even hit the bottom. The valentino had mutilated the exposed soft snail tissue.

Hey Charlie! Sounds like you are on the right path. Be careful! That method may cycle the tank again. The closed system has to accomodate more living space for more bacteria. :- )
