Controlling high Nitrates - HELP Please!

My two cents: I agree with the canister problem. But more importantly my first impression was "WOW! Thats quite a bit of live stock". Try monthly maintenance on your canisters and biowheel (replace/rinse filter media with tank water). That is one good place to start. The second would be to...

    uv hookup

If you chose to go the UV route try looking into a powerhead. It should be a small one where the flow is much slower. Powerheads are not that expensive. You should get out of the store with one that is less than $30.

anyway to change the inline on an ro/di

The second pic is an adapter on the end of the spicket on the kitchen faucet. Instead of piping it directly into the water pipes it attaches to the end of the kitchen faucet for it water source. Very ingenious! I would not change a thing! Thats just my opinion... WAIT! *snicker* IS THAT A...

    Power Outages

~OK...so tell me if I am the only GENIOUS that has thought of this~ I make my living by fixing computers. *wink* So, the day that HurricaneIvan was headed for my home I relunctantly took the battery back-up (UPS) from my network room and moved it to sustain my filtering system just in case the...

    RO/DI Water Storage

Thanks everyone! I have found a website that sells the jugs for water storage in emergencies or for camping. The link is: http://lawn-and-garden.hardwarestore.com/39-472-waterers/plastic-jug-506574.aspx My LFS sells them for $12/pc. Well thats not gonna happen... It looks like I have a...

    RO/DI Water Storage

I have purchased a 4stage RO/DI unit for my 55gal tank. I have been frugal with the water not giving it proper priority and I am TIRED of the darnd brown algae. The tank is going on 4mos old. The algae seem to LOVE the light. I have already cut my feedings to every other day and all my...

Crystallized Salt on upper rim inside tank?

They make solutions to spray on surfaces that exhibit salt creep. These solutions prevent, allegedly, the salt to crust on the areas sprayed. I have picked up the bottle once and the directions were in bold and capitol to not ever spray on or near surfaces with tank water so I promptly put it...

    white dots on glass

These are a type of "POD" I believe. They are thriving on the abundance of nutrients in the water. They should be more noticable after water changes. They are not bad. In fact they are good. A little unsightly but not something to worry about.

    Wet/Dry Canister?

lando has the info on the live rock rubble setup. The maintenance is a monthly thing where you dig out about a quarter of the bioballs and gently was them in saltwater. This helps keep the nitrifying bacteria under control. You might also need to siphon the bottom of the proclear of the...

    Wet/Dry Canister?

Mike, That ProClear will give you all the versatility you will want to have a pristine environment for your fish. I have noticed many people tend to stay away from the comments about eheim canister wet/dry filters. "If there was EVER a CHOICE" no question about it...go for the ProClear! It...

    New Guy Here

I wouldnt say that they are the best of friends but they arent bitter rivals either. The Coral Beauty seems to bully the Singapore around a bit. The cohabitate without any significant problems.

Cleaning crew, algae, and some basic questions

You are just beginning to get good things going. The algae and "mess" on the bottom is a sign that your tank is still cycling. IMO wait a few weeks before adding anything else. Let the habitat settle down. Then start adding 10-20lbs every other week. You can add a fish, snails, hermits, or...

    ICH ??

Charlie, The first thing you can do is start using garlic in the fish food AND try purchasing a special formula designed to help boost the fishes' immune system. Just ask your LFS for some. The garlic you can purchase either online or at the same LFS. If you havent seen my thread in the...

    Ideal SG ?

I had a problem with ICH once. I hope to God it never comes back! I lowered my salinity to 1.015 and jacked up the temp to 80. The lower salinity reduces their incubation time because it is not an ideal condition. I have seen, read, and heard others lowering their SG to 1.009 to get rid of...

Cleaning crew, algae, and some basic questions

While there may be quite a few possibilities I remember one thing I read that I thought was a bit unusual. There is a type of anenome that looks like a hydra but with more tentacles. This anenome is usually brown or a light color tan. They are nuisances between they are hard to get rid of and...

    Soaking Food in Garlic

I LOVE the garlic. I roast the elephant cluster on the grill with a little olive oil. BUT to add that to my tank kinda threw me off. I thought that the extract would be some special pastuerized, filtered, pure, and non-odor magic liquid. I was SO wrong! It looks like I can make some fairly...

First SW Tank! First post! First cry for help!

I agree with the sand over the crushed coral. You may think it is aesthitically better and may even try to follow the Freshwater stigmas. IMO the benefits of live sand are not only aesthitic but he sand also hosts a variety of saltwater creatures. The sand also provides more surface area for...

    Puffers

Be aware of the fact that the puffers eat snails and various other inverts. I had not bought a clean-up crew and decided to get some snails. Only one made it overnight with my valentino at them. One snail didnt even hit the bottom. The valentino had mutilated the exposed soft snail tissue.

    Wet/Dry Filter

Hey Charlie! Sounds like you are on the right path. Be careful! That method may cycle the tank again. The closed system has to accomodate more living space for more bacteria. :- )
