55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

Here's an update now that things have settled in. I ended up trading in my BN pleco since he was way too fond of throwing the new substrate around with his tail (I kind of thought it might happen, this stuff is pretty light). He was uprooting half the stuff and burying the other half...

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

Okay, so today was the day of the makeover. The room change didn't happen as it was too hard to level in the living room. But the substrate swap and planting happened, and here are some pics! Here's the holding tanks for the fish and plants during the draining: (Don't know why I had the...

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

And the plants have arrived: Sorry the picture quality isn't that good. Top row is Crypt wendtii 'Tropica' x3, Apon. boivianus, and Nymphaea zenkeri 'red'. Bottom row is Crypt lutea, Hydrocotyle leucocephala x10 bunches, and Crypt crispatula 'balansae' x25. They're all sitting in the tank...

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

Just a little update. The makeover hasn't happened yet, but the Hygro is out, so here is the tank without it: The floating mass is Rotala rotundifolia, which I may or may not keep. The plant order is in, here's the list: 25x Crypt. crispatula 'balansae' 10x Hydrocotyle leucocephala 3x Crypt...

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

And of course after I post about how nice the Nymphoides is doing, I get home and... The loaches decided to have a snack. Well, we'll see if they decide to leave it alone. Oh well... On a brighter note, my Anubias package finally got here, later than expected but in fine shape...

Thanks, newfound. I'm the one you just sent the hydrocotyle and Nymphoides 'Taiwan' to (thanks!), so you've caught on to my plan exactly! ;) The Taiwan lost some leaves in shipping but it is bouncing back nicely -- it has a new leaf about halfway to the surface already.

    Endlers and pandas

The cories are sharing my betta's tank. They've actually been in a couple weeks, but their fins were pretty ragged when I got them. Starting to heal up nicely. There's 5 in all, this is just 2 of them: And these Endler's are my first ever fish gotten by mail, very exciting. Received this...

    swordplant ID please

Anyone care to guess the species of this: It's maybe 6" tall now, short petioles, long oval leaves with rounded ends, and a pair of veins that go from halfway down the leaf to the tip. I couldn't find anything on Plantgeek that looks like it, but about half their sword are missing pictures.

55 gallon makeover day! Full tank shot, 11/11/07

Well, I've set a deadline for myself to get this done by the first weekend in November. The driftwood has been soaking for almost a month now with several changes of water, so that's getting ready. I decided to order Aquariumplants.com substrate. Here are a couple pics: Dry: Wet: From...

    FS Hygro salicifolia

I'm moving this out to make room for some new plants coming. "Willow leaf" Hygrophila salicifolia, a nice narrow leafed stem plant. I have about 20 stems available, each with at least 8 or 10 good leaves on it. Older leaves have had some deficiencies (turning white), but the new growth...

    Tank gone wild... Kind of...

WOW. The pics weren't loading for me yesterday, but I could tell from the comments this was worth coming back to, and how! Spectacular plants, and great fish too! One question, what species is the lily(?) sticking up left of center? (The one where the hillstream loach is chilling out on the...

    Stem plants for shipping

I got a freebie bag of trimmings from a fish store yesterday, and since I'm going off stem plants I'm offering them to a better home, if you'll cover the shipping. I think I've managed to ID them with PlantGeek, but please correct me if I'm mistaken: Rotala rotundifolia(?), at least 12 long...

    Lighting decision

Thanks for the comments. I was coming to the same conclusion about the zenkeri -- searching around there seem to be a number of success stories with it in lowish light. And it should certainly give a nice contrast with Anubias and balansae.

    Lighting decision

In my 55 gallon, I now have 2x65W daylight pc lights, 10 hours a day. The bulk of the plants in it are Hygrophila salicifolia, with a few smallish anubias and crypts. I guess I'm around the borderline for CO2, which I'm not going to do. I want to change this tank over to a lower-growth, lower...

    Why can't I grow vals?

My water is very hard. I don't remember the GH or KH exactly, but I'm sure it's not low -- pH is usually around 8. I do weekly water changes of about 30% in this tank. Other plants are Java moss, a couple swordplants, some Bacopa monnieri, and a tiny patch of Crypt parva. I think that's all...

    Why can't I grow vals?

I have a 10 gallon tank with 40W daylight pc lights, 10hours/day. I put in about 10 plants of vals (not sure what species, leaves are loosely twisted) on September 16, so about 3 weeks ago. Basically all the leaves appear to be dying. They looked healthy to start out, and each leaf starts...

3 Empty tanks, what to do?

I'm not who brought them up, but they are very cool little Tanganyikan cichlids that, um, dwell in shells :). Here's a good place to start finding out about them: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/shelldweller_corner.php I've been tempted by them...
