    Starting over...how?

Substrate is just basic gravel. I have a HOB CO2 canister that I use off and on. I am trying to keep the surface calm and lowered the output tubes from the filter to about halfway down the tank. I have not tested for iron, should I? I throw in some plant fertilizer every now and then. I...

    Starting over...how?

Hi all. I am not so happy with my tank these days. I had planted it a long time ago sort of randomly before I knew about this site, or anything about planted tanks. I have upgraded some equipment and want to replant the tank. Here are the stats: 55g FW HOB filter rated at 120 gpm 130 watt...

    Find the killer fish...

That makes sense, but I doubt the Pleco actively killed anyone. Further water tests - 0 Nitrates as well, KH and GH were around 150 ppm.

    Find the killer fish...

Thanks for the correction, you are correct. Big difference. 0 Nitrites is what it should have read. Getting a GH and KH kit today. 2 people thought the Pleco did it? I didn't think that they were aggressive.

    Lights for plants

I used Algon nitrate remover behind my filters and the black brush algae cleared up PDQ. There is still some residual that is not growing at all. The Algon worked pretty well.

    Find the killer fish...

Ok, test result are in.... 0 Nitrates, 0 Ammonia, Ph is at 7.2. Temp is at 78F, at the far end of the tank, at the top, away from the light. Did not get a GH or KH test yet.

    Find the killer fish...

Tank has been up for over a year. Pleco is about 3 years old, he moved from my frog tank to this when I built it. The adult survivors that I have are all about a year old give or take a month or two.

    Find the killer fish...

Good analogy thanks. What is the best complete water test kit to use? I have terrible flashbacks to high school chemistry when I think about controlling the water better.

    Find the killer fish...

Would bad water be so random though? I can see it for the Cardinals, but why not have problems with all the swords, or mollies..... :?

    Find the killer fish...

Ok, so someone in my tank (55 gal, planted, 40w, C02, HOB filter) does not get along well with others. I have a small clue as to whom is the killer, but Professor Mustard was not in the Aquarium with the algae scraper, so I am a little befuddled. Current cast of characters: 1 Pleco - about 6...

    Plant people I need help

I had a similar issue with my plants awhile ago. I pruned some of the big nasty spots off and left the dying leaves fall off and rot in the bottom. Made sure I was using a full nutrient fertilizer and the plants slowly regrew and are now happy little plants.

    Algae problem

Ugh, go back down a few forums and look for the Hairy Algae thread I started. Mine seems to be going away. I am doing weekly 33% water changes, added an Algone nitrate remover to my HOB filter, dropped my plant fertilizers and then removed as much as I could by hand, pruned the plants that...

    Help with Nutrafin CO2 canister

Cool thanks much. The quick rise yeast started fast. Got lotsa bubbles within an hour. It seemed to die yesterday, but this morning and even now it is popping out bubbles every 30 seconds or so. I stole the yeast from my wife's baking stash. Don't tell her.

    Help with Nutrafin CO2 canister

I got bubbles within the hour. They were eventually coming around every three or four seconds. I think it is dead now though. How long should these things last :?:

    Help with Nutrafin CO2 canister

So my CO2 seems to be working now. I blew off the "Activator" and "Stabilizer" and bought some Fleischman's Quick Rise. Added the sugar and a pinch of baking soda and stirred it up a bit after adding warm water. Blammo, bubbles are happening. Where do people put their diffusers in the...

    Help with Nutrafin CO2 canister

Thanks all! I am guessing that my yeast is dead. I love how they call it "Activator" and the baking soda "Stabilizer". Marketing people are funny. So this afternoon, after a trip to the grocery will result in a new batch of yeast and sugar with some "Stabilizer". I will also try the spoon...

    Hairy Algae

Chinese vs Siamese Algae Eaters I could not find SAEs, and was desperate. When I asked my local store, they just said, Chinese, not Siamese, like they were the same. I think I need a new fish store. Anyway, they CAE seem to be eating some of the now identified Black Brush Algae. They have...

    Hairy Algae

So my poor tank has some hairy algae in it. By some, I mean a lot. Forgive me if there has been a solution posted on here, but it is late and I need to go to bed. So I think I have hairy algae. It is black though, and looks like strands of hair attached to everything. I trimmed back my...

    Help with Nutrafin CO2 canister

Hi there, I just found this board and already have had questions answered without having to ask them. But I have one that I have not found an answer to yet. I am having trouble with my Nutrafin CO2 canister. It is a small canister that hangs off the top of my 55gal tank. It just...
