will this DIY sponge filter work?

If it's set up how I think then there are design flaws, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't work to some extent. It looks like water would likely only be drawn in from the bottom section of the filter material, so you ideally want it all to slide into another larger tube such that water is pulled...

NOOB alert! Buying a co2 tank today....

Can somebody please explain what the gauges are for? I'm assuming one is the pressure of the bottle so you know when it's time for a new one, is the other the pressure that it is regulated at? Are the regulators normally adjustable, and if so do you normally also have a needle valve for bubble...

I have made a mess trying to paint back Using acrylic paint & roller

It's all about patience IMO. Have never painted a fishtank but have painted plenty of other things. You need to apply coats that are not too thick and you need to let the coats dry reasonably well. A foam roller should be OK, and too much pressure (and/or too much paint on the roller) can...

    Bacteria survival

Does anyone know how well the bacteria from a FW filter can survive outside of water? The reason I'm asking is that I'm now running some form of wet-dry trickle filter, and it just struck me that if (when) the power goes out, and if it's for some time, that the filter material will be out of...

    Fluval C2 stopped -- 3 months old

In most submersed pumps if the impeller cannot turn then you probably wont get a noise at all. Did you remove the impeller and make sure it's nice and clean?

    Angelfish Round 2

TBH I think you're overthinking things. They manage to breed perfectly well in the wild obviously, they don't need a baby sitter. It might just take them a few goes to get it right but chances are they'll figure it out. I've successfully bred angels a few times. I never bother to check water...

    DIY Filter

Another filter idea, somewhat like HOB, is an above-tank filter. I just DIY'd one myself out of acrylic, sits on top of the tank where a piece of top glass would normally go, powerhead in the tank to pump it up there and a siphon (plus a couple of overflows just in case) to return it to the tank.

    Aquarium Android Apps?

Does anyone know of Android apps that help identify common aquarium fish species and gives details etc? Would be handy while checking out what the local stores have in stock as I'm not overly knowledgeable of the various species.

    DIY Filter

I'm guessing it's because the substrate provides a huge surface area to grow bacteria for filtration. I'm no expert but it doesn't sound ideal to me because you cannot perform any form of pre-filtering, and so you end up with fish food etc sitting there.

    Save my gouramis!

I did a water change (two actually, 30% changes) and he was looking better for a while there. Now he is not moving much at all again, not eating, he is resting his body either on the rocks at the bottom or a log which sticks up near the surface - maybe it's not a he but a she? and has mated?

    Save my gouramis!

Nah he looks much the same size in every way, just not very active at all. Pet store labels him as a "Blue Gourami" I believe - looks mostly white/silver (maybe a tinge of blue), with two black dots on him.

    Save my gouramis!

They breath from the surface? The air temp wont be significantly cooler though, there is no heater (certainly not needed at the moment at least, not in this climate). Tank is well covered though, but lots of bubbles etc. I've removed the cover however, I'll try anything.

    Save my gouramis!

36gal tank, a mix of neon and head+tail tetras etc, a male and female swordtail, two small clown loaches, and two gouramis (one 9cm, one 10cm long). I previously had three smaller gouramis, but they slowly died off, one by one, and I have no idea why. I've experience neon tetras enough to know...

    Really aggressive swordtail

Well while he was with the angelfish, he was anything but the boss. They're a bit bigger than him, plus there is three of them that actually live quite happily together (amazing) - well at least since one died because they others tore him to shreds, but the remainder live in peace :( Anyway...

    Really aggressive swordtail

Got a 35gal or so tank, had it running at bare minimum for ages - just a single male swordtail (there was a female, she jumped out and died overnight long ago). Anyway finally got it all together, plants, light, more fish - a new female swordtail, 3 small gouramis, a few neon tetras and two...

    Bad new tank experience

Seems I have had a whole lot of bad luck. Had only a small tank (~26L, 7gal) 2 weeks ago, went and got a bigger tank (~140L, 36gal) and started setting up. Anyway used some stuff from the old tank (old tank still in use) to get the cycle going (filter material mostly). Left for a few days...

    odd ball things

I haven't had much luck keeping things "tied down".......are lead sinkers (i.e. from fishing stores) ok for use in an aquarium?

    Odd first aquarium situation

It does, HOWEVER, the good news is the other half has given the go ahead for a bigger tank also, so we'll see how things go. I've been told by a couple of people that a smaller tank will at least initially slow their growth, so I've got a few weeks to get things together. I will try and take...

    Odd first aquarium situation

Valid point Also those pointing out the angelfish/neon tetra incompatibility, yes I was never looking to combine them, just mentioning maybe having in two separate tanks. If I can keep the neon tetras alive, I think a reasonable school of them would look awesome. Looks like I'm gonna have to...

    Odd first aquarium situation

Well being new to the aquarium game, I wasn't thinking about all this when I bought the setup and fish. I don't understand why people are confused why somebody would want a small tank - it's not primarily for cost reasons, but for location and preference (looks). I live in a town house with...

    Odd first aquarium situation

*imagines 10 times current tank*.........crap Maybe managable but i don't think so, a quick calculation makes me think 30 gallon would be my limit. Can't believe the store didn't warn me, they knew the tank size. 6 inches in length makes for a much larger fish than i was expecting, obviously...

    Odd first aquarium situation

How are the glass cats with a smaller tank? I've spotted a rather blank looking wall in the house ;) I think a reasonable size tank could go well. Gotta get approval from the minister of finance etc first, haha. That way I wouldn't mind the idea of putting the angels in the bigger tank (with...

    Odd first aquarium situation

Oh no.....lol Ok so are they alright at this size for the time being? Does the crowded nature cause extra aggression? Also, how fast do they normally grow? Will they grow slower if I keep them on a leaner diet? Unfortunately (unfortunate for cost reasons), it appears I've found another hobby...

    Odd first aquarium situation

First post here ;) Partner and I desided to get a smallish, simple tank a while ago (about 6 weeks ago now). I could go on, but to cut the long story short the tank cycled ok with two glass catfish (lets ignore the now non-existant neon tetras, bad advice from bad pet store), they're still...
