My $10 30 led DIY night light

Here's a little DIY i did on my tank, i will include some pics later. I took a string of outdoor LED christmas lights in blue, and then took an old 30w flourescent fitting removed the bulb and drilled 30 holes in the plastic. I fed the LED Xmas lights individually through the holes and then...

    Tiny Little Crab discovered?

While cleaning my tank yesterday i found a tiny little crab in the substrate. I only have hermit crabs but this looked like a regular type crab. It was about the size of a pencil eraser. I couldnt get a picture because it burrowed back under the sand. Any idea what it might be? and where it came...

What to do about Red (Slime) Alage?

i used a product called "Chemi-clean" to get rid of red cyano, it worked really well at killing off the existing cyano. However it does not change the conditions that allowed it to prosper in the first place. It is nice to see it all flake off however, and you can do the water changes to help...

    Skimmer Trouble

With regards to the overflow situation, i went to an autoparts store and bought 6 feet of rubber hose, which i hooked up to the drain-line on the bottom of the cup. I put the other end of the tubing into an old plastic 4 liter milk jug. The rubber hose cost me $4. Now i only have to clean out...

Culligan Machine at Grocery store.. is it RO/DI

So, excusing my ignorance, RO (reverse osmosis) is the passing of water through a membrane to remove any particulate matter, and DI (de-ionization) is removal of phosphates and other impurities? Because the water machine says it uses carbon filters, isnt this how you De-ionize water by using...

Culligan Machine at Grocery store.. is it RO/DI

like the topic asks.. anyone know if this is RO/DI water out of the "Culligan" machine at the store? It says its filtered through carbon, then a membrane and then its put through a UV filter. Just making sure this is good for my tank?

Aqua C Remora Pro for my 90 gallon?

I went with the Coralife Super Skimmer 125, and just moved the tank out from the wall a little. The Coralife Skimmer can be converted to a sump skimmer down the road (which is what i'll get eventually) and it was $70 cheaper. I'm seasoning it right now and will start skimming tonight. The prism...

Aqua C Remora Pro for my 90 gallon?

nice write up, one of my LFS also recommended the coralife super skimmer, the 125 model, the only drawback i see is that it is quite thick (6 inches) and would be hard to fit as a HOB skimmer unless i pull the tank out from the wall. (which would be a lot of work). I managed to bandage my...

Aqua C Remora Pro for my 90 gallon?

i need a new protein skimmer, the one i have was a "Make-Do" until i wanted to pony up some cash for a good one, i am looking in the 200-300 (Canadian) range. (so about 175-275) US. I currently dont have a sump and would like to keep things simple so i am thinking this HOB skimmer would be a...

    Tomato clown?

i Had a tomato clown in my 90 gal and he constantly chased my yellow belly damsel, i had him for quite a while but finally got tired of watching him harass the other fish. I'd compare it to a fresh water chiclid, agressive and territorial.

From everything i have read Copperband butterflies are difficult to keep, i have no experience with them myself however. Apparently its is a problem with them not eating.

    Microbubbles?

I went into the LFS and had a conversation with one of the staff members there about sumps, He mentioned the baffles in a sump are there to dissipatate "microbubbles" as they are harmful to the tank inhabitants. Now i have a Rena Filstar running on my tank as a refugium, running with live...

    Maxi-jet power heads/water movement question

From what i can gather maxi-jets are great powerheads. Also ive been reading that may people on this site customize them to increase performance. I have a filstar XP3 (its the big one, not sure if its 3 or 1) running on my tank with rubble in it.. but ive been told at the LFS that this will...

    pH really low

I'm definetly not an expert, but you should also be adding something to buffer the Carbonate hardness (or DKH as in german karbonate hardness). This buffers the alkalinity of the water so the PH is less likely to fluctuate. I believe DKH should be between 8-10 for saltwater.

Red Slimy Algae is taking over a corner...

I have been using a filtering system that came with the used set up i bought for the live rock and other things. I tested the water that comes out and it was 0 for phospate, i didnt test nitrates but as the tank was about 12.5ppm it didnt seem to be a source of high nitrates. I did go on a hunt...

Red Slimy Algae is taking over a corner...

Thanks for the advice.... So far ive checked everything out and discovered that while i was setting up the QT tank under the larger tank i inadvertantly unplugged the canister filter that i have set up as a refugium. Ive plugged it back in and added another powerhead (the one i use to mix water...

What should i feed my Racoon Butterfly?

I got him to help with an aipatsia problem i "inherited" from the used set up i bought, but i dont notice him eating any of the mature aiptasia. He is picking off the live rock, but he rarely eats any of the plankton/brine shrimp/blood worms that the damsel and clown devour. I have put red...
