AquaFest 2009, coming to you in October!

To the top with you! Site has been updated with bios for speakers, along with a listing of some of the vendors as sponsors as everything comes together. One month away, a great one to see if you are in the area!

AquaFest 2009, coming to you in October!

Great speakers, room full of vendors (and yet more vendors always block out ground floor hotel rooms surrounding the pool), fish show, huge all day auction on Sunday. What more could you ask for? AquaFest 2009

glycerin works well with lower bubble counts, sorta foams at high bubble counts though. Doesn't evaporate.

    Plants, anyone?

And you hit the crux of it. What people who are always saying "actinics are bad" fail to realize (or just don't want to explain the detail of) is that many Actinics DO provide useful light for plants, but others can indeed be useless. There are many actinics that completely miss that 440 nm...

It is pretty amazing depth in a 15g cube, isn't it? I have a favorite, but I'm biased. ;)

Bought New Lighting Today!! Quick Question

jsoong, the Coralife are NO T5's, it'd be 2x14. You are still fairly low light, but can probably grow the easier stem plants. Try growing Ludwigia Repens, Rotala Rotundifolia for starters, see how they do.

    100 gal planted

Can I make a suggestion? Well, I'm going to! ;) I think it is an enormous Wendtii? The plant dead center? Try moving it, to right or left - to left, next to driftwood, or to right, right of the tall thin plant that almost looks like a giant anubias lanceolata.

Answer to your earlier question: Plants consume ammonia before nitrite, and nitrite before nitrate. You'll see Ammonia bottom out before they start to consume nitrates, in other words.

36 Discus Plant Assortment (36 Discus Assortment)

I tend to agree with happygirl, it isn't easy to find that volume of plants from one hobbyist source, and the savings on a per plant basis get chewed up pretty quickly in shipping costs from several sources vs. only one.

You have a 4x65 Compact Flourescent fixture, NOT a T5 fixture. Just for the record/clarification T5 lighting uses T5 bulbs, not compact flourescents. 4' T5HO bulbs would be 4' long and 54 watts each. You still haven't posted a manufacturer of it btw, and that matters when it comes to...

    question on lighting

Oh, I'd be ready to have CO2 with that much light over a larger tank. ;) As an example: My 180g grows just about anything, and that is running at 1.7 wpg (with a recently added 2.6 wpg noonburst). While I will grant my light is a better one - this is TEK fixtures and T5HO's - it still...

New to planted tank.. some questions on lighting and such

Right on. A DIY rig doesn't produce enough to be dangerous, night or day. I suppose you could get there, rigging 5 big DIY bottles into a super rig or something....or going nuts and dropping in a few tablespoons of yeast....technically you could ;), but in a normal DIY rig, no real...

    Fish gasping and c02

Semantics get you nowhere. ;) The statement was at best misleading in the context of the post. Yes, technically, respiration occurs all the time. The posts, however, pertained to rising CO2 levels. Look - The guy is scared about gasping fish and your post sort of makes it sound like the...

    Fish gasping and c02

That isn't true. During photosynthesis, net CO2 is consumed, not released. As a matter of fact, it is consumed in a far greater amount than any night respiration. Net effect is a loss of CO2 in a given 24 hour period. Invariably, unless your plants are dying of course - and then you have some...

Looks a lot better! Way ahead of my first scape. I also happened to start with a 55g at planted tanks, and they are a real challenge because of the lack of depth. For that piece of driftwood - see if you can work it in so it looks like an exposed root attached to the vertical piece in rear...

Heh, just noticed it is filled with water.... no cardboard then, though I'd honestly drain it and fix the substrate if it were mine. ;)

    first timer w/ a 55

Try moving the driftwood to right of center. Think in thirds - focal points at third points, never centered. Grab a spatula, piece of cardboard, something, and level out your substrate. Waves in it - especially along the front glass - are distracting to the eye and detract from a scape. Remove...

Best aquatic gardening tool for the job?

    C02 system How to start????

5 pound can is fine on a 55g - but I'd advise get the largest one that fits under your stand (usually a 10 lb). It just means that many less times you fill it, and it is usually only a couple of extra dollars to fill 10lb vs. 5 lb. They are like $15 for 5, $20 for ten around me.

    CO2 diffusing into the air?

14% (roughly) of our ambient atmosphere is CO2 to begin with.... in a house, or even in a room, letting loose all of a 5 pound can over a week isn't going to change that percentage I wouldn't think. It's in your head - you "diffuse" more co2 into the air breathing over that week than the can...
