    I'm throwing in the towel

    I've had the same problem with my tank. I have more than enough flow (2 Tunze Stream pumps), use RO/DI water (TDS of zero for top-off), feed every other day (no flake food to add phosphate), using bulbs that are only 2 months old, run macro in a 50 gallon fuge, and overskim the tank. Water...

    Snake oil or sliced bread...

    For those interested in the DIY aspect with regards to LED lighting, there is a thread on reefcentral detailing a DIY nano-LED tank. The guy ordered an immense quantity of led's from Hong Kong; soldered them all in to place (no easy feat as the numbers are mind boggling even on a nano tank)...

    Water Temp climbing too high... why?

    I don't see how 27 watts of bulbs could be responsible for raising the water temperature by 8 degrees. It might be the pump that's feeding water to the UV fixture (unless you're piggy backing like Mel). Keep us posted (very curious as to the culprit)!

    new tank -- one month anniversary!!!!!

    Thanks for the kind words guys! The tank is 180 gallons. The rock structure itself is fairly open on the inside. The Coral Beauty Angel can traverse from one side of the tank and back without being seen -- it's pretty much a giant network of interconnected caves.

    New Skimmer!

    I cleaned all of the used equipment for my tank in a 50/50 white vinegar-water solution as roka suggested. Let everything soak for a half hour and rinse well under warm water. My skimmer also took a few to days to break back in. Quality used equipment at a good price is definitely the way to go!!

    Salifert calcium and alk readings - is something wrong?

    Sunday is test day and here are my readings: dkh 10.6 meq/L 3.77 these seem acceptable However, my calcium was off the chart. The kit stops at 500 ppm. I am estimating a calcium level of around 550. Is this possible or is there something wrong with my kit. Any help would be greatly...

    Sally Lightfoot molted.....

    Was quite dismayed this morning to see what I thought was a dead crab in the bottom of my tank. I recognized the body (it was the Sally that lost one of her claws). After a hastily prepared eulogy, I sought out her sole remaining partner to deliver the unfortunate news. To my great...

    Refuge light

    I'm using compact fluorescent bulbs -- 18 watt bulbs - color spectrum 6500K (daylight/stark white). You can get the lights from Casa Depot; they're cheap (a rarity in this trade); and seem to be working fine on my set-up.

    UV -> over-rated or indispensable?

    Currently I'm not using any UV sterilization. Would I be well served by impleting some? Your thoughts, recommendations, personal experiences would be welcome! Cheers!

    greetings from a new member

    Thanks guys. Eventually it will be a mixed reef. Currently, I have a cleaning crew (mainly snail based), a pair of Ocelaris(sp.) clowns, 6 green chromis, a coral beauty angel (could be problematic in the future), a red striped goby with accompanying blind shrimp, a few moon polyps. Of...
