My betta died! What did I do wrong?

May I make it clear; it is not normal for fish to die. When they are imported, they arrive cold and in bags that stink of ammonia. Bettas are transported little different; however, they have been through hell to get to us and if they go into our tank and they die then commonly it is something to...

    Preferred food

Are they wild? Flubendazole is a reasonably safe fish wormer. You can buy it on eBay as Fish Bendazole. If you have large volumes to treat, you can purchase Flubendazole pig wormer 5%w/w, work out the dosage and use that. Safe for marine fish also but not reef.

    Preferred food

Some species love greens. I used to feed mine defrosted garden peas. They loved them. Great protein too. Hikari and Tetra Doromin are pretty good foods. You might try Vitalis Aquatic Nutrition. Specialist foods. Probably the best on the market.

What’s wrong with my clownfish??! :(

How did this turn out? The fish looks dehydrated and atrophied. Perhaps an infection of the gill and gut. Like humans bulled fish are stressed which lowers the immune response and they get sick.

    150 gallon build

The pH scale is deceiving. 0.1 Is an an inordinate number of protons (H+). Chemically it is massive. Visually it is 0.1. O hope all goes well.

Hydrogen sulphide messes the water up for around 14 days. Add a scream of 1 cm sized air bubbles in the rear corners of the system for that time. Or leave in place, it's good to have air like that. Only cm sized bubbles. You may adjust so a constant stream. Produce them from open ended airline...

    Possible powerhead problem

It may be the case that disturbing the substrate in that way released deadly hydrogen sulphide that poisoned the fish. If the substrate was deep this is the likely cause of the downward spiral and mortalities. Add powder from two part epoxy, if that is what you used, then the dissolved oxygen...

    150 gallon build

You'll have some swing from two hours after the lights go out, to 2 hours after the lights come on. Have you checked that? You really require a digital reading that has been precalibrated each time you use it with pH 7 and 9 buffers. It is one of the best gauges of any problems. You are right...

Explain what readings I am looking at here please. I dont know the test kits you are using. The pH is a little low but the drift from light to dark is what you'll require.

    Montipora looking unhappy

It looks rather dark. The chances are your nitrate is 5 ppm or higher. SPS corals require low nitrate to thrive. Also phosphate will not help. For SPS, both parameters need to be round 0.02 ppm. Then its true colours will develop. Use Salifert test kits. The symbionts inside the coral have...

    Dary's tank!

Thank you, I keep low maintenance systems. Undetectable nitrate and phosphate around 0.02 ppm. However, not the multitude of fish that others keep. Ricordea species are robust and come in many spectacular colour combinations. They will survive pretty much anything and thrive. Some time ago, I...

    OCD clown fish.

I’ve seen mature pairs at TMC. From what I recall A. oscellaris males end up with a nodule on their chin. I bought an A. oscellaris wild caught around two months. Ago. They are unmistakable personality wise. Breeders are experimenting wildly with crosses. It makes no sense for them to not...

    OCD clown fish.

I am not sure if most clowns are captive bread. Their colours do not tend to be as vibrant. They do raise many, but I have no idea where they all go. I’ve always bought wild. However, I have never experienced a clown behave as you describe so yes, he or she maybe captive bread example with a...

    Buildup on gravel

It’s cyanobacteria by the looks of it. It is an indication or very low oxygen. Dangerously low in your case. You probably have a source of microbial hydrogen sulphide occurring in any place where water can be trapped away from the main water column and becomes anoxic. Microbes inhabit it and...

    OCD clown fish.

Sounds like he's preparing the tank for mate and because he was born in in the sea, he's expecting to attract a female or another male so he can change sex. I recon if he had an anemone to pamper, he'd probably setting down. The only problem with anemones is they wonder and blunder into flow...
