Got a job at my LFS

Oh I can just see that alligator chomping somebody's stupid kid who by some miracle managed to get in with it. That was the frustrating thing when I worked at a pet store. We would watch a minivan pull up, five or six kids would hop out, then the van would go across the street to Smith's...

    Adding LR

Well, I figuered it was way to good to be true. Common sense says that bacteria has to grow and die, and that doesn't happen overnight. But I figuered I'm a noob and don't know everything either.

New tank and I am on well water

Check Ebay for RO/DI sometimes you can get really good deals on there if your timing is right. I've heard that Salifert test kits are like the best of the best.

Who worries about the weight of their tank?

Well I'm in the steel business and if we have loads of 1000# on our joists we look into beafing them up. I would highly recommend getting a proffesional opinion before doing anything. If your tank is up against a wall check and see if the wall is a bearing wall. If that is the case some of...

What prices do you guys see for 150/180g tanks?

You could always DIY. My 82 gal. was a DIY, I bought it from the guy who built it for $70, around here that size is between 150-200.

    Adding LR

cool, so if I use the LR to cycle the tank does this mean I don't have to stick stinky shrimp in there. Also read something interetsing the other day about using biospira to cycle a tank. It claimed it would cycle it overnight. I find this hard to believe but I am a noob. Is this true?

    Adding LR

Will be setting up a new tank soon, my first one with LR. Do I need to cycle the tank before I add the LR or can I throw it in from the beginning?

    Foxface/Rabbitfish

LOL squishy. Well, I don't know why but I really want one. Maybe I can talk to my husband and get him to let me upgrade when the fish gets to big for my tank. But I'll probably just end up waiting til we get a bigger house instead. Thanks for the info guys. Glad I didn't just run out and...

Yeah, I read about the venom, handle with care. Does that every cause a problem with it's tank mates, or is it totally a self defense thing?

Love your signature quote!! If yours is 9" long I don't know that keeping one in a 55 is a good idea then.

    Foxface/Rabbitfish

Well I have found lots of connflicting information on these guys, and want to clear up the muddy water. :? I've read that they get along fine with others of their kind in their tank, and I've read that they don't. Also have read that they grow to 4", and that they grown to 9.5". And that they...

    Bio Balls, Nitrates and more

I agree, getting rid of the CC truly will save you. I had an 80 gal. fish only with CC, also I was using well water. The nitrate battle was hectic. I was doing 10% water changes once a week, and still not keeping on top of the NO3's.

    Fish selection suggestions

Using the base rock and seeding it with a small amount of LR was my original plan. (sorry I thought I had stated that in this post, no wonder everybody has been harrasing me about it.) I know this will take a little more time, but I'm really not in a hurry. Perhaps adding a goby after my tank...

Why is it that all the cool fish never work in your system? Murphy's Law I guess. How about this alternate I saw on doctorfoster/smith, a red headed goby. (gobiosomo puncticulatus). Looks like they stay fairly small. I've never seen this one before.

Continuing to fight Nitrates!?! Me too.

I've heard suggestions to thaw your frozen foods strain and feed using tank water to avoid getting all the nitrates that are in the liquids they are frozen in. Though I have never tried this, and I can't remember if it came from a credible source or not. Something to try though.

how to stop bubbles from a powerhead

The Hagens have the plastic tube that runs the venturi. It's supposed to spit out bubbles if you adjust it that way. There should be a little black "adjuster thingy" at the end of the tube, you can twist that down to turn off the venturi. If that doesn't work just take the air intake tube off.

I know, that's why I'm looking for something that does the same job as the mandarin. I've been surfing the net and have seen a Catalina Goby/Blue-Banded Goby (Lythrypnus Dalli). Has anybody had any experience keeping these guys?

    Fish selection suggestions

What would be a good goby to keep the bottom clean, and mix up my sand. I really like the mandarins, but am a little scared of the reputation as being hit and miss eaters. Basically I don't want something that is just going to die. Thought about a scooter Blenny, but I think I would like a...

Continuing to fight Nitrates!?! Me too.

It took me about 9 months to get the nitrates under control in my 90 gal., but I didn't have any live rock or a protien skimmer. One thing I know of that didn't help was using CC for a substrate. I don't know what you are using, but that could be a problem. Also I was using aqua medic test...

    Fish selection suggestions

I have several powerheads for is. I'm skimping on the LR partly cause I have this strange desire to seed other rocks with it, and have it be something that I grew. I'll be using the sandman just because I already have it. Not sure how many pounds of LR I will have I need to make a venture to...

    Fish selection suggestions

Ok, I'm going to be setting up a 55 gal. Right now the only thing I'm really planning on having is a pair of Percula clowns, and also a pair of skunk cleaner shrimp. For the time being I will be running the tank with a sandman HOB filter, and will have a minimal amount of LR in the tank...
