So when I got home last night, the angels looked fine. They were a little ragged around the mouths, but no worse that yesterday morning. They stayed away from each other, but didn't fight any more last night. I guess they left each other alone during the day. So I didn't separate them...

I'd be worried about using soap. I'd go with the bleach. After rinsing a ton with regular water, you can add some dechlorinating treatment to the rinse-water to get rid of any trace amounts of bleach.

You could be going through a mini-cycle. It sounds like you had a bacteria bloom before you got the new filter. Now with the new filter, the bloom is bigger. While ugly, they're not harmful to the fish. I had one a while ago and it took about 2 months to clear up.

I'm with Rupret on the algae chemicals. I used Algae Destroyer once. All the algae was gone (not in the water, but on the plants/glass/etc., but I think it totally messed up my chemistry because I had a bacteria bloom for about 2 months after using it!

Loaches eat snails. I've heard that clown loaches are great for snail problems. I've got some yoyos. They do alright. I've still got tons of snails, but my oldest yoyo is huge. I think he's just doing the best he can!. I've got a bunch of neons in my tank and they do just fine with the yoyos...

I had 1 angel in my 18 gallon (though I probably shouldn't have!) I now have 2 angels (plus everything else in my sig) in my 56 gallon and they seem pretty fat and happy (attention hogs!)

One of my amazon swords came from my other one. I just let it grow on the original plant until it got so big it was shading the rest of the tank and sticking out of the water a bit :) Since you've already clipped it, I'd just float it like Purrbox and Jchillin. :) They don't have to be...
