Check the water temperature. If the water is too warm it holds less dissolved O2 so the fish tend to go to the top of the tank.

I haven't been keeping fish for long but my understanding is that if your tank contains ammonia then the nitrites shouldn't be at 0. That would suggest to me that the nitrogen cycle isn't established properly. Because you have fish in the tank already I think you need to use a chemical treatment...

It's not a massively coarse substrate but it's not sand. Isn't there a product I can place individual stems into? What about some kind of sponge?

I am setting up a new tank and really like the look of twisted Vallis plants to make a curtain/wall against the back of the tank. It comes as single stems though. Is there something I can push the stems into so I can place them all at once, like oasis in flower arranging! I tried placing single...
